Most counties in Maryland show a spike in early voting turnout in 2012 while Anne Arundel and Worcester Counties show decreases.
Turnout for early voting this year has already exceeded that of 2010 in 22 of 24 jurisdictions in the state. And while two counties report declines in the overall percentages one Eastern Shore county reports close to a 20 percent turnout. But the exact meaning of the higher turnout is hard to immediately discern, according to one local elections analyst. Residents across the state have the opportunity to cast votes for President, U.S. Senate, eight congressional races and seven statewide ballot questions including congressional redistricting, the Maryland DREAM Act, same-sex marriage and expanded gambling. How deep is the Democrats' hold over Maryland?
As President Barack Obama zeroes in on Maryland's sixth consecutive Democratic presidential candidate win, the state's "blue" status may not be as lopsided as history and recent polls otherwise suggest. There is little doubt that Obama is on his way to winning Maryland in next month's election; his double-digit lead in the reliably Democratic state is holding steady in polls conducted since Mitt Romney emerged as his Republican rival. Millions of people will have their television sets tuned to this evening’s presidential debate, hanging on every word spoken by President Barack Obama or challenger Mitt Romney, but maybe they should be paying closer attention to their eyes. According to Boston College psychophysiologist Joseph Tecce, with only one exception, the candidate who has blinked more during the debates has lost the election. (George W. Bush blinked more, but still beat Al Gore in 2000.) Supporters say law gives students who are illegal immigrants "a level playing field."

The Republican candidate will launch his campaign in all three of District 8's counties.
Dave Wallace, a Republican businessman from Carroll County, is planning to run against Rep. Chris Van Hollen in the coming congressional election. Wallace will announce his candidacy in each of District 8's three counties Thursday, including a stop at the Social Security Administration in Rockville at 5:30 p.m. Van Hollen has won his last four elections with more than 70 percent of the vote, but that was before the state approved a congressional redistricting plan that splits much of Montgomery County between Districts 6 and 8 and brings parts of Frederick and Carroll counties into Van Hollen's district.
