Academics Factor in UMD Big Ten Decision

Maryland will become part of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation.

Joining the Big Ten Conference was not only an athletic decision, but also an academic one, according to University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh. By becoming part of the Big Ten, the university will be part of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of universities that share academic resources and research. The financial gains from joining the Big Ten will be used to earmark substantial funds for students in need, not just student athletes, according to Loh. This marks a new financial paradigm for intercollegiate athletics where the athletics help support university, Loh said. "That's paramount in these tight times," he said. Chevy Chase Native Goes From Freshman Boston College Walk-On to the ACC Spotlight

Danny Rubin is averaging around five points a game for the Boston College Eagles as an 18-year-old freshman.

Whether it’s the Chevy Chase playgrounds and recreation centers, the gym at Landon School or nationally-televised ACC games at Comcast Center or Duke Cameron Indoor, basketball insiders agree: this kid can shoot. The kid is 6-foot-6 Danny Rubin of Chevy Chase, who has rocketed virtually out of nowhere to the edge of national stardom in his freshman season at Boston College this year. A hot three-point shooter, he already is averaging around five points a game for the BC Eagles as an 18-year-old freshman with 19 starts this season, including seven in ACC games, and 33 treys, including multiple 3-pointers in 11 different games so far this season.
