Six-day attendance lowest since 2008; but Tiger Woods drew one-day attendance record of 48,611 on Sunday, The Gazette reports.
Though the AT&T National saw low turnout last week following Friday’s violent storm, Sunday marked a one-day attendance record for the golf tournament, The Gazette reported. The storm prompted officials to ban spectators from the course Saturday, and the six-day attendance of 136,155 was the lowest since 2008, when Tiger Woods didn’t compete, according to The Gazette. Woods founded the tournament and the event benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. Sunday, however, marked a single-day attendance record for the tournament, with 48,611 coming out to watch Woods finish atop the leader board, according to The Gazette. Updated 2:30 p.m.: The AT&T National golf tournament will reopen Sunday after having been closed to fans and volunteers Saturday, following Friday night's storms. Gates will open at 9 a.m. Sunday, with tee times starting at 11 a.m., according to the AT&T National Twitter account. The last ball drops at 6 p.m. Saturday tickets and parking will be honored during Sunday's competition. It's undeniably hot out on the golf course at Congressional Country Club. I'm going to take the editorial liberty to say that. But that hasn't stopped residents from Maryland, Virginia and DC from coming out in droves to see Tiger Woods. Those who came to the U.S. Open in 2011 were denied the opportunity when Woods pulled out of the tournament, but the loyals on Friday got a chance to see him shoot three under for the day and two under for the tournament so far. Woods isn't the only draw for golf lovers. "It sure beats working," said Jason Sutphin, a Fairfax, Va., resident lounging in the shade at the tournament. Sutphin came out with two other men. Driving along River Road near Congressional Country Club this week, you’ll probably find yourself stuck in a little more traffic than usual as cars pack the road trying to find parking for the AT&T National golf tournament. The country club doesn’t offer parking, so tournament goers have a few choices. They can park in offsite lots (up to 18 miles away) and pay between $10 and $20 to park and get shuttled to the event. The tournament also offers a VIP pass to park near the course for up to $150. Or, as many opt to do, they can park on people’s front lawns -- for a price, of course. It may not be as large of an event as last year’s U.S. Open, but Montgomery County businesses are preparing for an economic boost from this week’s AT&T National Golf Tournament. The tournament will bring 120 of the top PGA Tour professionals—including Tiger Woods—to compete at Congressional Country Club. Woods, who founded the AT&T National Golf Tournament, was the winner in 2009—the last year it was played at Congressional. The tournament returns after Congressional played host to last year’s U.S. Open, which drew nearly 230,000 attendees and had an estimated economic impact of between $130 and $150 million in the county.
