Adventure Theatre In Glen Echo Park Partners With Musical Theater Center

Theater merger strengthens business, gives young performers more opportunities

Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park joined forces with the performance training expertise of Rockville's Musical Theater Center in March to form Adventure Theatre MTC. The new company has a stronger business model and can offer more opportunities for young actors, such as casting children rather than adults in the roles of Christopher Robin in Winnie the Pooh and Mary and Laura Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie Christmas, said the producing artistic director for Adventure Theatre MTC, Michael Bobbitt. A professional theater will give young actors-in-training a reason to “step up their game” with the prospect of making it on the big stage, and the revenue from the Musical Theater Center’s training programs will help offset the low-cost…

A New Twist on a Holiday Classic

Ken Ludwig’s ‘Twas the Night before Christmas premieres at Adventure Theatre.

Oh, what joy when a new holiday production appears on the horizon. Not that we don’t all love Nutcracker—we really do. But when another beloved classic story moves to the children’s theater stage, and its world premiere is local, well, does it get any better than that?  Ken Ludwig’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, based on the poem by Clement Clarke Moore, debuts Nov. 18 at Adventure Theatre. Ludwig is a three-time Tony nominee and Olivier Award-winning playwright, author of Crazy for You, Moon Over Buffalo and Lend Me a Tenor.  The show, running through Jan. 2, is directed by Jerry Whiddon and features Washington, D.C. actor Gary Sloan. The play was commissioned by Adventure Theatre, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary season. “…

Playwriting Contest Gives Kids a Voice Against Bullying

Students are invited to write a short play as part of the contest and winners will receive gift cards and a chance to see their plays performed.

Three local organizations are taking the bull by the horns—or rather the bully—to raise awareness of a nationwide epidemic.  Adventure Theatre, along with partner Montgomery County Recreation and sponsor Monument Bank, is staging a 10-Minute anti-bullying playwriting contest for middle school students. First, second and third place winners will be chosen and will receive gift cards of $100, $50 and $25, respectively. Winners will also be given a private dramaturgy session alongside professional playwrights as well as the opportunity to have their play directed and performed in a staged reading by professional local thespians. Six plays, three from the student winners and three donated professional scripts, will be presented at a staged …

Children’s Theater Seasons Launch at Adventure Theatre, Imagination Stage

Expect upbeat performances with Imagination Stage's Aladdin's Luck and Adventure Theatre's Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse.

Adventure Theatre’s 60th anniversary is off to a delightful start with its production of Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, directed by Nick Olcott and based on the book by Kevin Henkes. Mouse Lilly is the queen of everything. So she says and so Helen-Hayes nominee Felicia Curry plays her -- larger than life. The kids in the audience eat up Lilly’s over-the-top theatrics, but Chester (S. Lewis Feemster) and Wilson (Elliott Kashner) are also crowd pleasers as her best friends. Chairs are used cleverly in the production, such as in the marvelously constructed costume and bassinet combo occupied by Lilly’s new baby brother, Julius (Troy Jennings), the bane of her existence. Sure, Lilly hits some bumps in the road, when her exuberance and even more…
