Metro DC Sheds Staid Image to Put Young Designers on Fashion Runway

Washington's stiff fashion image is being erased by a confluence of forces that are putting DC on the fashion map.

By Anamika Roy, Capital News Service The nation’s capital has long been known as a place full of stuffy gray suits and neatly pressed ties, but these days, designers are loosening the top button. “There has been a stigma with DC fashion,” said Michelle Gibson, a fashion designer and Howard University senior. “It’s gray, tacky and uninspiring.” That stiff image is being erased by a confluence of forces that are putting DC on the fashion map: Up-and-coming, home-grown designers, showcase venues in DC Fashion Week and the DC Fashion Incubator, plus a young, hungry, well-heeled consumer market. In Chevy Chase, a strip of high-end stores that include Christian Dior, Cartier and Ralph Lauren was dubbed "Rodeo Drive of the East" by developers.  …

Gaithersburg Book Festival Announces Schedule for Featured Presentations

The Gaithersburg Book Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the grounds of City Hall in Olde Towne Gaithersburg on May 18.

The schedule of featured speakers for the Gaithersburg Book Festival was announced Wednesday afternoon. Chevy Chase Sculptor Unveils New Work, 'Vortex'

Barton Rubenstein's newest large-scale sculpture, "Vortex," is located in the courtyard of a Gaithersburg apartment building.

Chevy Chase sculptor Barton Rubenstein's latest large-scale sculpture, Vortex, recently was installed in the courtyard of Gaithersburg's Hidden Creek apartment home complex, at 559 Girard Ave., according to a statement from Barton Rubenstein Studios. Vortex was inspired by the many wind farms that Rubenstein and his family saw during a road trip across the country, the statement added. Last year, Rubenstein brought one of his sculptures—Skybound—to the 265-acre Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park in southwestern Ohio. The event also celebrates the 75th birthday of the historic theater building in Bethesda.

The historic theater building in which the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club recently opened turns 75 this year. To celebrate the supper club's March 1 opening and the building's 75th birthday, a "Grand Re-Opening" ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 6 p.m. on May 17. Remodeled Bethesda Row Cinema Opens May 3

The remodeled theater will have a full-service bar, luxury seating and an expanded concession menu.

The newly remodeled Bethesda Row Cinema is set to open May 3 with new amenities such as a full-service bar, luxury reserved seating in each auditorium, three-dimensional projection theaters and an expanded concession menu, according to theater spokeswoman Stephanie Kagan. "Each of the eight auditoriums has been outfitted with new screens, sound systems and special leather chairs designed to provide maximum comfort to patrons. Plus, the theatre has installed a new digital system that will provide a satellite feed for live domestic and international performances," according to a statement from the theater, which has been owned and operated by Landmark Theatres since 2002. Bethesda Art Walk Popular Despite Rainy Weather

The Art Walk still drew a crowd, especially at the “Tunnel Vision” exhibition at the Bethesda Metro Station.

Despite the questionable weather and occasional rain, Bethesda Art Walk still drew a crowd on April 12, particularly at the exhibition near the Bethesda Metro Station. “Tunnel Vision: Art Under the Avenue,” an exhibition featuring the work of 12 regional artists, lines the walls of the pedestrian tunnel that runs under Wisconsin Avenue. The exhibition was part of the Bethesda Art Walk this month. 27th Annual Filmfest DC to Feature More Than 80 International Films

Oscar nominee Julian Assange biopic and more will air during the 11-day festival.

Since its first event in 1987, Filmfest DC has shown more than 1,000 feature-length and short films from more than 55 countries, with celebrity guests including Morgan Freeman, Charlize Theron, Sydney Pollack, Salman Rushdie and Amitabh Bachchan. The 27th installment of the annual event runs from April 11 to 21, and will kick off with a screening of Underground, a film portraying the young life of Julian Assange, the infamous founder of WikiLeaks. The film will air at 7 p.m. at Regal Cinemas Gallery Place and will feature a live telephone interview with Assange himself immediately following the screening. Real Estate recently opened its fourth location, at 7032 Wisconsin Ave. The office's grand opening, on April 4, highlighted local artists with an exhibit featuring work from the Yellow Barn Studio in Glen Echo. Bach to Rock Expands Offerings with Music Program for Infants

The successful Bethesda-based music school chain is teaching the region's tiniest musicians to rock.

Bach To Rock, the Bethesda-based music school chain, recently launched a music program geared at the region's tiniest musicians. The "Rock n Roll" early childhood music program, designed for infants and toddlers, is being piloted at franchises in the Washington, DC, region and soon will be rolled out to locations in New York and Pennsylvania, according to a news release. Bach to Rock opened its first location in Bethesda in 2007, and grew with franchise agreements in the Washington, DC, region after meeting success. Last year, the company expanded its footprint nationally. INC magazine named the business one of the fastest-growing small companies in the country in 2011 and 2012.
