A new poll released by Goucher College shows that Marylanders see negative effects on local and national economies but not always their own finances.
A majority of Marylanders say they are concerned about the effects of the federal sequester on state and national economies even if they aren't sure it will affect them personally, according a poll released Tuesday afternoon. The poll released by the Sarah T. Hughes Field Politics Center at Goucher College found that 75 percent of those surveyed said the automatic federal spending cuts that went into effect March 1 will negatively impact the state economy while 68 percent said the cuts would hurt the national economy. Chris Van Hollen, on Monday presented officials with a $40 million check for the construction of a new pedestrian tunnel between NIH and Walter Reed. Part of a total of $89 million in grants to both Montgomery County and the State of Maryland for military base realignment (BRAC) related projects, Montgomery County Director of Transportation Art Holmes and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s General Manager Rich Sarles accepted the ceremonial check on behalf of the project. Recovery Act yielded $6.7 million to repave more than 43 miles of seven county roads.
Elected officials on Monday praised the completion of nearly 43 miles of newly repaved commuter routes in Montgomery County thanks to $6.7 million in federal stimulus aid, and said more aid is needed. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D) of Baltimore congratulated County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) for the county’s completion of the projects, which employed 50 people. “I’m so pleased at what Ike Leggett has done because as we bring federal money to our community, dollars are only as good if they’re well-spent in a well-focused way to solve local problems,” Mikulski said during a news conference just off the fresh pavement of Shady Grove Road at the J. In Maryland, men who work full time make an average of $140 more per week than women, according to data compiled by the congressional Joint Economic Committee. Nationally, the pay gap is even greater, at $148. Over the course of a year, that's a nearly $7,700 difference in wages.
