Bethesda Baseball Star Danny Hultzen 'Pitched Brilliantly' in Rainiers' Season Opener

The local baseball star currently pitches for the Tacoma Rainiers, the Triple-A affiliate team of the Seattle Mariners.

Bethesda's Danny Hultzen, 23—who got his start playing baseball in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase youth baseball program, Patch reported—made a good showing on opening night in the Pacific Coast League, The (Tacoma, WA) News Tribune reported. "Hultzen [now playing for the Tacoma Rainiers, the Triple-A affiliate team of the Seattle Mariners] pitched brilliantly for six innings," helping the Rainiers to beat the Fresno Grizzlies, 9-1, last Thursday night, The Tribune reported. "He got ahead of hitters, he stayed ahead, he used both sides of the plate," Tacoma Rainiers manager Daren Brown told The Tribune. "The big thing for me is he went six innings and threw 73 pitches. Check out who's lined up to play on Bethesda's collegiate baseball team this season.

Baseball season has officially arrived with Monday's opening day for the Washington Nationals. Though the collegiate season is still a few weeks off, here in Montgomery County, fans are gearing up for the season by checking out the recently-released Big Train roster. The summer collegiate baseball team plays in the Cal Ripken League, with teams from Rockville, Silver Spring-Takoma Park, Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Virginia. Players hail from colleges across the country and stay with host families during the summer in the Bethesda and Potomac areas. The Big Train has taken the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League Championship in three of the last four seasons and has donated more than $600,000 to improving baseball fields in Washington…

New Concessions Caterer Steps up to the Plate at Shirley Povich Field

Prime Choice caterers will be serving summertime fan favorites during the Big Train's season.

Gearing up for the Big Train’s baseball season this year? Get your tastebuds ready, as well. The Prime Choice Caterers have signed on to serve up concessions at the Home Run Cafe at Cabin John Regional Park's Shirley Povich Field, the Big Train's home base. Ledo Pizza, Rita’s Italian Ice and Auntie Anne’s Pretzels also will be returning this year to offer their summertime fare on the Shirley Povich Field concourse. Prime Choice, which offers catering services across the Washington, DC, metro region, launched as a family butcher shop in Olde Towne Gaithersburg in 1981. Walter Johnson Memorabilia Auctioned in New York

The family of the famed baseball pitcher and Walter Johnson High School namesake put several prized possessions up for auction Saturday.

The family of famed major league pitcher Walter Johnson placed several of the baseball great's personal items up for sale at an auction in New York Saturday, MLB.com reports. Johnson, who died in 1946, helped the Washington Senators win game 7 of the 1924 World Series, marking Washington's only World Series championship. An untorn ticket to the storied game was one of the items placed on the auction block, according to the report. It had been kept in a scrapbook by Johnson's wife. Bethesda's Walter Johnson High School takes its name from the sports legend, and Bethesda's summer collegiate baseball team "The Big Train" pays homage to Johnson's nickname.
