The tower would be used in emergencies to clear the Purple Line tunnel of smoke, according to a planning staff memo.
The Maryland Transit Administration is proposing a 92-foot ventilation tower be placed in popular Woodmont Plaza as part of an emergency ventilation system for the planned Purple Line, according to a county planning staff memo. The memo provides a series of updates on how the planned, 16-mile light rail and re-constructed Capital Crescent Trail would mesh with surrounding communities in Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Silver Spring. The memo was prepared for a Montgomery County Planning Board briefing set for Feb. 28. The $2.2 billion project is in early design stages, but not yet fully funded. The proposed location of the tower in the heavily used public plaza is "not ideal," planning staff wrote, though there are "many ways that MTA can …

Freezing temperatures have caused Rita's Crepes to close temporarily.
Rita's Crepes has shuttered temporarily, according to a notice posted on the popular Bethesda Row crepe stand at Bethesda and Woodmont avenues. Consistent freezing temperatures have caused the stand's water lines to malfunction, according to the sign. "We will be back when things change," read the notice. The sign encouraged patrons to visit Rita's Crepes at the Bethesda Central Farm Market, held Sundays at Bethesda Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The kiosk, run by Annandale resident Rita Douglass, has been serving up the sweet and savory treats to hungry Bethesda Row shoppers since 2009. Flavors include orange marmalade, maple butter, brown sugar and roasted almonds, and the savory vegetable Florentine crepe, filled with …

Bethesda Row management company said it offered the coffee chain a space on Arlington Road.
Bethesda Row management company Federal Realty said a retail store may replace the Bethesda Avenue Dunkin' Donuts when the coffee shop's lease expires at the end of May. Federal Realty leasing manager Ralph Ours confirmed to Patch that Federal Realty has decided not to renew Dunkin' Donuts' corporate lease at its Bethesda Avenue location. However, Ours said the management company did offer Dunkin' Donuts the former Medifast space on Arlington Road. “It’s not a black and white issue, it’s more of a balance issue for us,” Ours said. “The most compelling reason behind the decision was, 'Do we continue to have more food on the street or shift it back to retail and apparel?' Ten years ago there were a lot more restaurants, and now there’s a lot…

A local franchise group says Federal Realty will not renew a corporate lease when it expires at the end of May.
Bethesda Row management company Federal Realty will likely not renew the lease for the Dunkin’ Donuts location on Bethesda Avenue, according to the Luis Group, a company that operates the location and seven other Dunkin Donuts franchises in the area. Though the group hopes to keep the successful shop in its current location, Luis Group chief operating officer Boris Lander told Patch the Bethesda Avenue coffee shop will likely close when the lease expires at the end of May. Dunkin' Donuts is signed on to a corporate lease for the space with Federal Realty, and the Luis Group subleases from Dunkin Donuts, Lander said. “There’s still a possibility [Federal Realty] might come back and say OK, three year extension or five year extension, but it…

Construction work that has left some neighbors rattled is back on again in downtown Bethesda.
After a hiatus, blasting that left some neighbors rattled began again at the Lot 31 construction site last Friday, The Gazette reports. The blasts began on Dec. 5 after crews conducting excavation encountered a level of dense, hard rock, according to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center. The blasting was halted temporarily Dec. 18. Doug Firstenberg, a principal at StonebridgeCarras, told The Gazette the blasting will continue for another few weeks. Excavation at the site is about 80 percent finished and is expected to be complete in two months, The Gazette reported. The construction project, known as Lot 31, has taken out a popular Bethesda Row surface parking lot with about 270 spaces. An underground parking garage with 940 …
