Baseball season has officially arrived with Monday's opening day for the Washington Nationals. Though the collegiate season is still a few weeks off, here in Bethesda fans are gearing up for the season by checking out the recently-released Big Train roster. The summer collegiate baseball team plays in the Cal Ripken League, with teams from Rockville, Silver Spring-Takoma Park, Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Virginia. Players hail from colleges across the country and stay with host families during the summer in the Bethesda and Potomac areas. Prime Choice caterers will be serving up summertime fan favorites during the Big Train's season.
Gearing up for the Big Train’s baseball season this year? Get your tastebuds ready, as well. The Prime Choice Caterers have signed on to serve up concessions at the Home Run Cafe at Cabin John Regional Park's Shirley Povich Field, the Big Train's home base. Ledo Pizza, Rita’s Italian Ice and Auntie Anne’s Pretzels also will be returning this year to offer their summertime fare on the Shirley Povich Field concourse. Prime Choice, which offers catering services across the Washington, DC, metro region, launched as a family butcher shop in Olde Towne Gaithersburg in 1981. Tickets are on sale for the celebrity softball classic, which is set to go forward ahead of the summer collegiate baseball's team's season.
Big names in media and sports will go head to-head next month during the second annual Big Train Celebrity Softball Classic, a charity softball game organized by Bethesda’s summer collegiate baseball team. Past and present Washington Redskins including Ryan Kerrigan, Chris Cooley, Lorenzo Alexander, Antwaan Randle El, and Kai Forbath are on the roster for the sports team, which will compete against media personalities from CBS, NBC, FOX, Comcast SportsNet, The Washington Post, and 106.7 The Fan. The family of the famed baseball pitcher and Walter Johnson High School namesake put several prized possessions up for auction Saturday.
The family of famed major league pitcher Walter Johnson placed several of the baseball great's personal items up for sale at an auction in New York Saturday, MLB.com reports. Johnson, who died in 1946, helped the Washington Senators win game 7 of the 1924 World Series, marking Washington's only World Series championship. An untorn ticket to the storied game was one of the items placed on the auction block, according to the report. It had been kept in a scrapbook by Johnson's wife. Bethesda's Walter Johnson High School takes its name from the sports legend, and Bethesda's summer collegiate baseball team "The Big Train" pays homage to Johnson's nickname. Free admission this evening on a game nearly a month in the making.
The Bethesda Big Train, Bethesda’s summer collegiate baseball team, is offering free admission tonight on a game that’s nearly a month in the making. Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Red Birds was originally set for Saturday, June 30th – the day after the violent storm that left widespread damage and tens of thousands of people without power. The storm damaged Shirley Povich field, toppling a portion of the outfield fence, knocking over a mounted speaker used for the team’s sound system and downing trees on the field, according to general manager Adam Dantus. Is Junior looking for a little extra batting practice? Do you have an empty bedroom in your house begging for an occupant? The Bethesda Big Train Baseball team is looking for a few local host families to take in players during June and July. The summer collegiate team that plays at Shirley Povich Field in Cabin John Park will bring 25 ball players from around the country to the Bethesda-Potomac region this year. In addition to playing on the Big Train team, many of these players will be camp counselors for the program's summer baseball camp.
