More than 10,000 Washington-area commuters are expected to participate in the event, which the League of American Bicyclists began in 1956, and which first took place in the DC area in 2001, with a few hundred participants, a County Council news statement reported. Mayor Slavin Bikes, Rides Metro to Work

For Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 18, Chevy Chase Patch spoke with Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin about bicycle commuting.

When Mayor Jeffrey Slavin goes to work, the last thing he worries about is whether there's gas in the car. That's because he doesn't use a car to get to work. Instead, the mayor of the Town of Somerset, in Chevy Chase, rides the Metro or a bicycle. He commutes to his office in Rockville on the Metro, but doesn't take a bicycle with him on the trains during rush hour. For shorter commutes—such as to the gym or to the Town of Somerset Town Hall (where he presides over the town council as mayor), he uses the bike. "I try to use my bike as much as possible," said Slavin, who was honored as Philanthropist of the Year last fall by the Community Foundation for Montgomery County. And, when the Capital Bikeshare comes to Friendship Heights, "I'm …

He'd never make it in the District ! He should emulate Mayor Grey and have a Cadillac Escalade (with choice of colors) and a driver (armed to protect him from the honest citizens of the District) AND many hangers on in the second Escalade. Now both Escalades are gulping gas at about 12 mpg at taxpayer expense and the mere thought of taking the germ filled Metro would keep Mayor Grey up for weeks …   more ›

Green Around Town

The Greenest Commute in D.C.

Glimpsing the world of a bicycling commuter makes all of us wonder what unexpected sights we’d see if we rode our bike to work every day.

Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 20, and there is no better inspiration for riding your bike to work than the words of Bethesda resident Margaret Dailey.  Dailey, an FCC attorney, cycles regularly to her job in downtown Washington, D.C.  Patch had a chance to interview Dailey who told us the pleasures – and practicalities – of riding to work from Bethesda to Southwest D.C.  Enjoy and think about what you might experience if you cycled to your job from time to time.
