New Board Chair Baptiste To Focus on Budget, Finding New Police Chief

Patricia S. Baptiste, the new chair of the Chevy Chase Village Board of Managers, is an organizer of the Connecticut Avenue Corridor Committee and has volunteered with Mobile Medical Care, Inc.

Last month, Chevy Chase Village elected two new members to its Board of Managers, and—in a public meeting at the Village Hall—the board voted Patricia S. Baptiste as chair. Baptiste is no stranger to Village Hall. She served on the board from 1982 to 1991, and rejoined the board last October. “I’m very pleased to be back on the board … (and am) very honored to be chosen chair,” she said in a telephone interview. Some of the primary things on which Baptiste will focus her attention as chair of the Board of Managers will be finding a new police chief and keeping the budget balanced, she said. “And then we have two new board members, so working to establish a collegiate board where (everyone’s) talents are optimized would be another thing I …

Chevy Chase Village Holds Election Forum

Nearly 40 residents attended Monday's candidates' forum for a question-and-answer session before the big election day this Saturday.

Five residents vying for four seats on the Board of Managers for the Village of Chevy Chase answered the public's questions Monday night in a candidates' forum at Village Hall. Three incumbents—David L. Winstead, Patricia (Pat) Baptiste and Gail S. Feldman—and two challengers—Richard Ruda and Gary Crockett—attended the more than hour-long forum to discuss their platforms and priorities. Board members serve two-year terms. The forum, held just five days before Saturday’s election, featured opening statements from each candidate and a question-and-answer session highlighted by questions about the budget, transparency and a pay freeze for Village employees. “I’m glad we had it,” resident Charles Monk said after the event. “It’s not a …

Chevy Chase Village Braces for Board of Managers Election

Five candidates are vying for four seats in this Saturday's election.

An election that could continue to significantly change the face of the seven-member Chevy Chase Village Board of Managers will take place Saturday, according to the Village Elections Committee. Five candidates will vie for four seats in the election. The candidates include three incumbents—David L. Winstead, Patricia (Pat) Baptiste and Gail S. Feldman—and two challengers—Richard Ruda and Gary Crockett. Board members serve two-year terms. Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Village Hall on Saturday, May 7. The Saturday voting follows a race last spring where three newcomers ousted three incumbents and eventually changed the make-up of the appointed board offices.  Residents questioned the lack of transparency of that appointment …

Board Makes Changes To Committees in Chevy Chase Village

Two committees were formed, including one dedicated to good governance.

Committees in the Chevy Chase Villages are undergoing some changes. In a meeting with a full agenda, the Chevy Chase Village Board of Managers approved two new committees, changed the name of another and made appointees for committee chairs. Resident Porter Wheeler was appointed chair of the newly formed traffic committee. In the past, the village did have such a committee. "Each of the committees should have a clear directive", said board member Patricia Baptiste. Assistant Treasurer Lawrence Heilman agreed. "I would recommend that within a reasonable period of time that the [traffic] committee be able to prepare a vision statement, a scope of work [of] what it tends to focus on and also how it tends to operate in terms of meetings and …

Chevy Chase Village Board Elects New Officer Positions

The newly appointed member will not hold a specific officer position.

With a newly appointed member on the Chevy Chase Village Board of Managers, the group elected new officer titles in Monday night's meeting. In Oct. the board appointed Patricia Baptiste as the newest member of the board of managers. In the 1980s she was an elected official on the board and also served as chairperson. Despite Baptiste's past experience, she will be the lone person dubbed with the title board member. "I think it's particularly important that people who were elected by village residents hold the jobs they were assigned," said Baptiste. The board unanimously voted in all nominations for board officers.  Acting-chair David Winstead will serve as chair of the board. Peter Kilborn, formerly assistant secretary, will now serve as …
