Towson Square: A Better Bethesda?

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz says new development at Towson Square will make it a mixed-use destination to rival Montgomery County's urban centers.

Will new development make Towson a better Bethesda? Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz sure thinks so. An $85 million project under construction known as Towson Square will bring a 16-screen Cinemark movie theater, restaurant and retail space and a 862-space parking garage to a site adjacent to Towson Town Center, Towson Patch reported. And at a press conference announcing three restaurant tenants for the development – Nando’s Peri-Peri, La Tagliatella, and On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina – Kamenetz said the development would be "better than Bethesda, better than Silver Spring or whatever else [Montgomery County Executive] Ike Leggett can churn up in Montgomery County.” “[Kemenetz] mentioned Bethesda no less than half-a-dozen …

Creative Parties To Vacate Woodmont Location

The store will open a new location on St. Elmo Avenue as early as next week.

The iconic blue and green building on Woodmont Avenue, home of Creative Parties Ltd., could be the latest casualty of Bethesda’s downtown redevelopment, according to local reports. The event planning and invitation store will move to the first floor of the Landow Building on St. Elmo Avenue as early as next week, reports Bethesda Now and local blogger Robert Dyer. Creative Parties Ltd. owner Tracy Bloom Schwartz told Bethesda Now the move is to avoid any potential redevelopment on the current site, where she’s been in business for 16 years. “Instead of signing another five-year lease, Bloom Schwartz decided to move to a more steady location,” the report states. The new location will be slightly smaller. Redevelopment plans for the area had…

Mia's Pizza Cited For Rodent, Roach Infestation

Popular pizzeria was shut down temporarily in mid-October, WUSA9 reports. "We don't have a problem now," owner tells Patch.

Popular Bethesda pizzeria Mia’s Pizza was temporarily closed in October after county health inspectors discovered a mouse and roach infestation, WUSA9 reports. Owner Melissa "Mia" Ballinger told Patch that the establishment no longer has an infestation. When a WUSA9 reporter approached Ballinger, she was shown on camera shoving the television crew’s camera before apologizing and inviting reporters to come inside the restaurant. Montgomery County health inspectors reported mouse droppings on the floor and on canned goods, and live roaches on the counter and on a cutting board during food prep during an Oct. 16 inspection, according to the WUSA9 report. Ballinger told Patch the infestation originated from a building next door from which a …

PHOTOS: Bethesda Businesses Brace For Sandy

Patios are shuttered and hurricane specials are on the menu as residents swarm Bethesda businesses in preparation for Sandy.

Residents flocked to grocery stores, restaurants and bakeries in downtown Bethesda Sunday morning in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. Some businesses were offering hurricane-themed specials -- like the "Hurricane Sandy-wich" at Mussel Bar -- in the final hours before the storm packs a major punch to the region. With losses from extended power outages from June's derecho storm fresh in mind, many businesses were preparing for another financial hit. "It will effect business, definitely," said Jin Chon, an employee at Bubbles hair salon on Bethesda Row. Shelves at grocery stores were picked nearly clean of bottled water, toilet paper and C and D batteries. Restaurants, along with residents, are busy preparing for the "Frankenstorm," stacking …
