The congressman accused lawmakers of bowing to special interests after the Senate rejected expanded background checks on firearms. Do you agree?
The U.S. Senate rejected expanded background checks on firearm sales Wednesday, rejecting bipartisan legislation endorsed by President Barack Obama. The bipartisan effort of Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA), failed 54-46, falling short of the 60-vote threshold needed to break a filibuster, The Huffington Post reported. The measure would have expanded the current check system to cover sales of weapons on the Internet and at gun shows. Opponents said the expansion would have set the stage for a national registry of gun owners and said that it would not have prevented tragedies such as the Newtown shootings, HuffPo reports (see Gun Bill Background Check Amendment Fails, Other Key Provisions Follow). In response, U.S. Rep. Chris…

By Jeffrey Benzing, Capital News Service The congressional supercommittee has failed, and now Maryland could face as much as $150 million in cuts to its 2014 budget, including millions in lost funding through federal education and health care programs, state experts say. And that's not all. Maryland's defense and federal work force could be in jeopardy through mandated cuts to defense and other federal programs. "Defense spending—that means jobs in Maryland," said Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Cockeysville, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee. "It would clearly be very hurtful to our economy." The supercommittee, officially known as the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, was charged with cutting more than $1.2 trillion …

Van Hollen, who has indicated that he will work to protect the interests of federal workers who live in Maryland's 8th District, is named to 'Super Committee.'
It looks like they'll be getting ready to measure Rep. Christopher Van Hollen, D-MD, for that Superman Cape any day now. Van Hollen, the 8th-District congressman and ranking minority member of the House Budget Committee, was selected Thursday by minority leader Nancy Pelosi as one of the three House Democrats to serve on the so-called 'Super Committee'—the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, a panel that will be seeking to find a compromise agreement on the debt and deficit mess before the end of this year. It's a prestigious assignment for Van Hollen, but not really a big surprise, given his close connections with Pelosi and his position on the House budget panel. The other Democrats named were Rep. James Clyburn, D-SC, and …

After a recent financial forum in Silver Spring, Rep. Christopher Van Hollen took questions on budget-related issues from reporters and other forum attendees in an impromptu question-and-answer session.
Rep. Christopher Van Hollen, D-Md., is the ranking minority member of the House Budget Committee and has secured a spot at the table in the bi-partisan negotiations on deficit reduction chaired by Vice President Joe Biden. When the usually soft-spoken Van Hollen talks these days, people tend to listen. Roll Call, a leading Capitol Hill newspaper, recently tabbed Van Hollen, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., and Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., as part of an "emerging generation" of lawmakers poised to move quickly up the leadership roster in the House. Following a recent financial forum held in Silver Spring, Van Hollen weighed in on a few of the more pressing budget-related topics with reporters and others in attendance. Here's what Van…
