For more than 30 years, Tony Zelaya has had a love affair with shoes, telling Bethesda Magazine recently that he "started selling shoes because I love shoes. I didn't have a lot of money. I depended on my sales for money." Zelaya features a selection of designer shoes - for women, men and children - along with accessories such as handbags and jewelry. The majority of reviews on Yelp’s website are extremely positive, raving about the store’s selection, as well as the personalized service from Tony. However, that is not enough, as Zelaya says that he can no longer remain competitive in this economy and will be slowly liquidating his merchandise over the next few months. The 200 underperforming stores across the nation, including ones in White Flint and Friendship Heights, are expected to close by the end of April of this year.
Borders, facing near strangulation with $1 billion in debt hanging around its neck, will close 200 stores, or nearly one-third of its retail outlets nationwide. In its court filing at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York, the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based chain said the stores slated for shuttering are losing an astounding $2 million a day and that massive inventory clearances will start this weekend, the three-day President Day’s holiday, when traffic in malls and at stories is traditionally high.
