The county executive will try to attract Indian biotechnology companies to Montgomery County.
County Executive Isiah Leggett will pitch Montgomery County as the place for biotechnology when he accompanies a Maryland delegation to India on a six-day trade mission beginning Saturday. “The objective here is to try to make certain, in this global, competitive arena, that people understand what Maryland has to offer and what Montgomery County has to offer,” Leggett (D) said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. The delegation also will include Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) and first lady Judge Katie O’Malley, state Business and Economic Development Secretary Christian S. Johansson, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) and about 100 business leaders, educators and state government officials. Nongovernment members of the …

The county executive declared June 8-19 "The First Tee Week" in Montgomery County.
With U.S. Open Championship fever—and traffic—gripping the county, County Executive Isiah Leggett recently proclaimed June 8-19 as “The First Tee Week” in Montgomery County. The First Tee, an initiative of the World Golf Association with support from the PGA and LPGA, has a mission “to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf,” according to the nonprofit’s Web site. Leggett (D) read the proclamation during an April 28 visit to Needwood Golf Course in Rockville, where The First Tee holds golf lessons. The program is also offered at Laytonsville and Sligo Creek golf courses. The program teaches the game to …

County Executive Isiah Leggett’s proposed budget cuts will eliminate 32 positions in county libraries.
Never underestimate the power of local citizenry to effect change. A group of ardent book lovers hopes to do just that. It didn’t matter that their regular meeting space at the Chevy Chase Library was occupied. The kitchen in the back of the library, with its small table and homey feel, would have to do. Time is of the essence when a neighborhood library is on the chopping block. Members of the Library Advisory Committee for Chevy Chase and the Friends of the Library, Chevy Chase Chapter met March 16, and County Executive Isiah Leggett’s proposed budget cuts occupied much of the conversation. “We are the library board. We have the opportunity to articulate our concerns," said Otto Lewis, Library Advisory Committee member of the Montgomery …

Residents and businesses can offer feedback on Pepco’s service and impacts of outages.
Montgomery County has extended the deadline for online Pepco feedback surveys. A group of community leaders appointed by County Executive Isiah Leggett called the Pepco Work Group is conducting the surveys. Two different surveys are offered, one for businesses, another for residential customers. A press release about the extended deadline, which was supposed to be today, read “The survey is designed to obtain information on how the public views Pepco’s service, the extent to which customers have experienced outages, the economic impact of those outages and some insight as to what additional costs customers would be willing to incur in exchange for improved service.” The group is investigating the reliability of Pepco’s service in the …

Dagley, who dug into police disability payments and other controversial issues, prepares to leave.
Montgomery County officials are actively searching for a new inspector general, hoping to replace a man who in nearly six years of service frequently sparred with county government leaders. In one probe, Inspector General Thomas Dagley revealed the police department's failure to charge a former fire official who caused a four-car pile-up after allegedly driving while intoxicated. In another, he revealed police officers left the county force to accept lucrative work elsewhere while collecting hefty disability payments. Dagley told county officials in August that he wanted to leave by early December, but said Monday that he would stay at least through late January as local leaders look for his replacement. Over the past few years, Dagley …

As you may already have seen from my Twitter feed, http://www.twitter.com/sam_arora, the State of Maryland's trade mission to India already has generated $37 million in business deals for Maryland companies.
