Montgomery County's Office of Consumer Protection director will field questions.
Confused about condo fees? Got a question about the covenants of your homeowners association? Eric Friedman, director of Montgomery County’s Office of Consumer Protection will field questions about condominiums and homeowners associations during a live online chat from noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 10. The chat is part of the department’s “Consumer Ed Café … Food for Thought” series and will focus on the department’s Office of Common Ownership Communities, which handles disputes between residents and condominium or homeowners associations. Challenges loom as state laws on school funding and teacher pensions add to fiscal burdens.

The Montgomery County Council will host a forum on the next county operating budget at 7:30 p.m. in the third floor council hearing room of the Stella B. An increased police presence will provide extra security and pedestrian safety awareness in some of the county's busiest retail centers.
Black Friday shoppers might notice an increased police presence in some of the county’s busiest shopping areas. Beginning Friday through Dec. 23 the Montgomery County Police Department’s annual “Shop With a Cop” campaign will provide extra security in retail areas in all six county police districts. Officers also will distribute 9,000 reusable bright yellow shopping bags, county police Chief J. Thomas Manger said at a news conference on Tuesday in Rockville Town Square. The bags have a drawing of a pair of eyes above the slogan “Can you see me now?” and are part of a Montgomery County pedestrian safety campaign also announced Tuesday. Approaching the midway point of his second term in office, Leggett (D) reflected on the upcoming election, the state of the county and its budget, his priorities for the remainder of his second term and persistent rumors about whether he’ll seek higher office in 2014. Leggett: 'Tight economic times' call for 'creative ways to reduce the cost of government.'
Thirty-four Montgomery County Department of Transportation employees received $223 checks from County Executive Isiah Leggett on Tuesday in recognition of their efforts to save the county money with an innovative idea. The bonuses are part of a program that encourages county employees to look for ways to save the county money. Staff from the department’s Sign and Signal Shop established a program for separating and selling the more valuable metals collected as part of the shop’s scrap metal recycling operations. Recovery Act yielded $6.7 million to repave more than 43 miles of seven county roads.
Elected officials on Monday praised the completion of nearly 43 miles of newly repaved commuter routes in Montgomery County thanks to $6.7 million in federal stimulus aid, and said more aid is needed. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D) of Baltimore congratulated County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) for the county’s completion of the projects, which employed 50 people. “I’m so pleased at what Ike Leggett has done because as we bring federal money to our community, dollars are only as good if they’re well-spent in a well-focused way to solve local problems,” Mikulski said during a news conference just off the fresh pavement of Shady Grove Road at the J.
