Driver, Bike Rider Dispute Leads to Assault on Battery Lane

A woman grabbed a man on a bike after a near-collision with the car she was riding in, according to police.

Tensions between bicyclists and drivers can sometimes ride high on Bethesda streets. But one recent disagreement escalated into an assault on a biker on Battery Lane, according to Montgomery County police. A man was riding his bike on Battery Lane and Park Avenue around 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, according to a crime summary. The bike and a car nearly collided, according to Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Officer Janelle Smith. The biker hit the car with his hand, and a verbal altercation began between the man and the three women who were riding in the car, Smith said. One of the women in the car grabbed the man on the bike, according to Smith. The crime was reported as a aggravated assault in the crime summary. It wasn't clear …

SPEAK OUT: How has the Woodmont Closure Affected Drivers, Cyclists and Pedestrians?

One advocate says the closure jams streets and endangers those on bike and on foot.

As developments break ground and Bethesda adjusts to shovels and cranes, one advocate says the closure of Woodmont Avenue is endangering pedestrians and cyclists. A portion of Woodmont Avenue near busy Bethesda Row was closed in September for 20 months to allow for the construction of a major public parking garage and two mixed-use residential developments. Traffic heading south on Woodmont must now either turn right or left onto Bethesda Avenue rather than connecting to Wisconsin Avenue. Ben Ross, of the Action Committee for Transit, wrote in a post on the blog Greater Greater Washington that the closure has "put pedestrians and cyclists at risk, while needlessly jamming up car traffic." Sidewalk closures are a detriment to pedestrians …

Just to be clear - I am not complaining about the closure of Woodmont itself. It is necessary while new buildings go up that will be an asset to Bethesda. What has endangered pedestrians and cyclists and slowed down auto traffic much more than necessary is the way that the county Dept. of Transportation is managing the intersection during the closure. Cyclist Struck On Massachusetts Avenue Left 'Unconscious and Bleeding'

“As a Mom of two girls I still haven’t come to terms with the fact that I could have easily been killed in the flash of a second," Jodi Grant, 44, wrote in an email to Patch.

Police are still looking for the driver of a minivan that struck a cyclist Friday, driving off and leaving the woman unconscious and bleeding with injuries including a broken neck, broken back and broken nose. Jodi Grant, 44, was struck Friday morning while riding her bike near Massachusetts Avenue and Cromwell Drive. A mother of two daughters and the director of the national nonprofit afterschool.org, Grant had taken the day off work for an orientation at her daughter’s new school, she told Patch in an email. She was returning from a quick bike ride to Great Falls and was about five minutes from her home when a van in the left lane veered into the right lane, where she was riding. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh no,’ because I had nowhere to go…

Young Chevy Chase Cyclist Wins at National Competition

Claire Van Ekdom, 16, wins two of three races at the USA Cycling Junior Road National Championships in Augusta, GA.

Chevy Chase resident Claire Van Ekdom, 16, may not be in the Olympics—not this year, anyway. But, she's only 16, and athletes in her sport—cycling—tend to begin to peak in their mid-20s, so there's still plenty of time, The Washington Post reported. Van Ekdom, who bikes up to 18 hours a week and will be a junior at Georgetown Day School in the fall, has had a good summer this year, The Post reported. Earlier this summer, she won two of three races in her age category at the USA Cycling Junior Road National Championships in Augusta, GA.  A few weeks later, Van Ekdom won two stages in her age group at the Tour of Rimouski, "which featured an international field of top junior riders" in Quebec, The Post added. She typically bikes 200 to 300 …
