Yearly Christmas breakfast for homeless and low-income residents has seen an uptick in guests this year.
An annual Christmas breakfast event for homeless and low-income residents is expanding this year, and the Original Pancake House is looking for donations of outerwear to offer its guests. The breakfast has become a Christmas tradition for the community's needy at the Bethesda and Falls Church Original Pancake House locations. Each year, the restaurant coordinates with social services agencies to put on the event, and nearly 100 volunteers help out with cooking, serving and cleaning up. About 300 guests attended last year, and this year that number has more than doubled to 700, according to Original Pancake House reps. More than enough volunteers will be on hand to help, but donations of coats, hats, gloves, hoodies and sweaters for kids …

Soley Somma plans to drive a truckload of donations to New York City Tuesday morning to help victims of superstorm Sandy.
Wheaton resident Soley Somma has strong connections to New York City. It's where she met her husband, and it's where her brother now lives. And on Tuesday, Somma and her mother will be driving to the city with a truckload of donations for the people left cold, hungry and powerless in the wake of superstorm Sandy. Somma began collecting food and other emergency items on Friday at her home, and word spread quickly. She and other volunteers worked from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, sorting through items and labeling them. "Every single room in my house is filled," she said. Somma is coordinating with Queens Mama, a neighborhood network for parents in New York, and she will be delivering supplies to Rockaway, Queens, a peninsula particularly hard-…

Participation in the Village of Martin's Additions' food drive has fallen off in the past two months.
While more than 1,300 pounds of nonperishable food have been donated to the Village of Martin's Additions' food drive in 2012, participation has fallen off in the past two months, said Linda and Dick Kirschten, food drive coordinators, in an email to Patch. "Hunger remains a major problem, despite some signs of an economic uptick. And with prices at the pump eating into family budgets for other essentials, food assistance becomes even more important," the Kirschtens added. In fact, Montgomery County is one of the most expensive places to live in the country (as well as one of the richest counties in the country). "Families with young children in Montgomery County must earn at least $64,000 a year just to cover their basic needs without …

Donate items for soldiers serving at the front lines in Afghanistan through Operation: "Treat our Troops," a donation drive headquartered in the Village of Martin's Additions office.
Making a difference in someone else’s life can be as easy as picking up a package or two of white sport socks, some lip balm and sunscreen, power bars and maybe a phone card or two, and bringing them over to the Village of Martin’s Additions office for Operation: “Treat Our Troops.” As part of Montgomery County Community Service Week (Oct. 16-22), the Village office is collecting donations for troops serving overseas (mostly in Afghanistan). The donated items will be packaged on Oct. 22, and troops at the front lines should receive the care packages by Thanksgiving, said Doug Stein, the donation drive’s organizer. Stein—a Montgomery County resident and president of Wexford Homes, LLC, which is currently constructing a home on Chestnut …

Council, residents also hear from Pepco representative.
The council of the Village of Chevy Chase Section 5 voted Tuesday night to dole out $12,500—less than $10 per household—to charitable organizations. The 3-2 vote came during a regularly scheduled council meeting at the Chevy Chase Village Town Hall—when three new council members took office. Two of those newly elected members, Greg White and Nancy Pines, voted against the donations in their final form, while three members—new council member Tim Hanlon, Chris Richardson and Peter Gray—voted for the allocation. White and Pines had argued that more money be donated to organizations that they believed provided more of a direct benefit to Section 5, but did not put forth a plan to that effect. The six organizations—Rosemary Hills Primary School…

The Salvation Army needs to raise $350,000 before Friday night to meet its initial Red Kettle campaign goal of $1.6 million.
Reports to be released Wednesday are expected to show a $350,000 shortfall in donations for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign, according to Maj. Steve Morris of The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command. The National Capital Area Command, headquartered in Germantown, had a $1.6 million target. Throughout the campaign, which ran from Nov. 12 to Dec. 24, the organization has reported lower-than-usual donations. As of Dec. 21, the Salvation Army reported a 40 percent decline in donations to the Red Kettle campaign in Montgomery County. At this point the organization would be happy to reach last year's $1.35 million in donations, said Ken Forsythe, a Salvation Army spokesman. The organization has seen a slight increase in …
