Neighbors say the traffic added by a seven-story building on West Lane would render Montgomery Lane unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists.
A plan for a residential building near Montgomery Lane that's been hotly contested by downtown Bethesda residents is set to go before the Montgomery County Planning Board Thursday afternoon. Residents who live near the proposed building at 4831 West Ln. have filed more than 100 pages of correspondence with planning staff opposing the seven-story, 120-unit proposed apartment building, The Gazette reports. The community supported a previous plan that would have brought 48 residential units to the site, said Jon Weintraub, chair of the Downtown Bethesda Condo Association. But with 117 underground parking spaces, the added traffic from the new proposed structure would gridlock Montgomery Lane and render it unsafe for cyclists and pedestrians, …

Blasting at Lot 31 in Bethesda has been halted temporarily, and will begin again in the new year, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center reported.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School students prefer open lunch over MCPS meal programs.
Crowds of students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School anticipate the sweet sound of a bell every school day at 10:54 a.m. Students grab their coats and wallets and head out the door with a hearty appetite. They’re off to grab lunch at one of downtown Bethesda’s food establishments—on their own dime. Open lunch is not a new policy at B-CC High School. The popular lunch option has been around for as long as one can remember, according to Vice Principal Bennie Green. “I’ve been here for five years and open lunch has always existed, so it’s probably been more than 10 or 20 years,” Green said. Green says students are always waiting for that 10:54 a.m. bell, which marks the start of a 40-minute break for lunch, socializing and a midday stroll…

Trimming a lane for drivers and adding space for cyclists are among bike infrastructure improvement suggestions made by cyclist groups ahead of Capital Bikeshare.
Taking a driving lane out of Arlington Road north of Bradley Boulevard to provide space for bike lanes are among the bike infrastructure improvements proposed by two local cyclist groups ahead of the implementation of Capital Bikeshare. The “road diet” for Arlington Road is among the list of suggestions developed by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Montgomery Bicycle Advocates for Bethesda, Friendship Heights, Silver Spring and Takoma Park. Bicycle safety has been in the spotlight ahead of the implementation of a downcounty Capital Bikeshare system, expected to launch next year, which some say could bring inexperienced cyclists to busy downtown streets and increase conflicts between drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. “In order…
