Wings Concept Dries Up; Live Music Planned for Former Box Space

The owner of the former Box Bar is headed back to Bethesda with a new live music concept.

The owner of the former Box Bar is back and planning a live music concept for the Old Georgetown Road space after a recent re-branding effort failed, according to blogger Robert Dyer and a Bethesda Now report. Dyer broke the news Wednesday that an effort to re-brand the former Hooters-style sports bar as a family-friendly eatery featuring Dry Fried Wings had gone south, with the restaurant appearing closed in recent weeks. Bethesda Now confirmed the news and reported that former Box Bar owner Jason McCarther bought the space back from George Farrell, the short-lived owner who re-launched the restaurant last month with a high-profile kickoff event featuring civil rights activists, Maryland Lt. I enjoyed the quite atmosphere of The Box about a year ago, however, it was obvious that they would not survive on a wing and a prayer, which consisted of a DJ a foosball table and nothing more. Over the course of just twelve months the interior conditions hit rock bottom (vermen, broken restroom fixtures, etc) which indicated the place had "jumped the shark". Former Hooters-style Sports Bar To Host Civil Rights Event Friday

The Box Bar and Grill has a new owner and a very new image.

You may think the Box Bar and Grill, formerly known as a Hooters-style sports bar, would be an odd choice for a venue to host an event Friday that will feature state officials, civil rights leaders and members of the recently pardoned Wilmington Ten. Allow us to explain. In November of 2011, the Box opened on Old Georgetown Road with the tagline, “The Sexiest Wings in Bethesda.” The concept was to provide a sports bar that would rival Hooters, complete with "15 televisions and 31 scantily-clad waitresses in uniforms sponsored by Under Armour - think compression boy shorts with little referee shirts to go with them," the Washington Business Journal reported.
