Young Essay Contest Winner Would 'Focus on the True Meaning of Community,' If She Were Mayor

Fifth-grader Michaelina Panner, who won the Town of Somerset's "If I Were Mayor" essay contest, read her essay at Monday's Town of Somerset Council meeting.

If she were mayor, Michaelina Panner—a fifth-grader at Somerset Elementary School—would "focus on the true meaning of community" by "addressing[ing] the challenges elderly people without family close by face" every day. "They often confront the most challenges with the least resources," Michaelina wrote in her entry for last spring's Maryland Municipal League's "If I Were Mayor" essay contest. Michaelina, daughter of Morris Panner and Nancy Jardini, was a semi-finalist in the statewide essay contest last spring for fourth-graders, and her essay was selected by the Town of Somerset as the town's winning essay. Somerset Student Wins 'If I Were Mayor' Essay Contest

Town of Somerset's Alison Mills is the regional winner of the Maryland Municipal League's contest for fourth-grade students.

Brainstorming for ways to improve the community isn't just for adults and elected officials. In Maryland, kids do it, too. The Town of Somerset is home to one of Maryland's 11 "If I Were Mayor" essay contest winners. Alison Mills—daughter of Kevin Mills and Councilmember Franny Peale—won the regional "If I Were Mayor" contest (for Montgomery and Howard counties), and was honored last week in Annapolis, where she met Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown (MD), and went for a boat ride with the other winners in the city's harbor. The statewide essay contest is held each year by the Maryland Municipal League, and gives fourth-grade students across the state "a chance to creatively use grade-specific language arts skills and civics/social studies knowledge…

Last Chance for 4th-Grade Students to Enter the 'If I Were Mayor' Contest

Essay contest entries are due by Friday, March 30.

This week is the last chance for Maryland's fourth-grade students to enter the "If I Were Mayor" essay contest, sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League and the Maryland Mayors Association in partnership with the Local Government Insurance Trust and Injured Workers’ Insurance Fund. The essay gives a student the opportunity to share his or her thoughts on how he or she would lead his or her local municipal government as mayor. The student is encouraged to think like a leader and to answer questions related to this year's theme, "Meeting the Challenge." Since 2001, the contest has challenged students to learn about municipal government through creatively sharing their thoughts on being a mayor. Each 275-word essay must open with the line “…
