Grocers Could Donate Thousands for Local Schools

Earn money for local schools just by doing the grocery shopping.

Local stores including Giant Food, Safeway and Harris Teeter have pledged to donate cash to schools for purchases made this school year. Giant Food will award points to registered schools for purchases made between Oct. 5 and March 28, 2013, through its A+ School Rewards program. At the end of that time, the total points earned by a school will be used to calculate a percentage of a $2 million award. Last year, Hoover Middle School in Potomac was awarded $14,000 from Giant through the grocer's program. To sign up for the program, visit the chain's website here. Users must register again each year to continue earning awards …

Hikers Climb Sugarloaf to Support Breast Cancer Fund

As October sees a plethora of fundraising events to cure or raise awareness about breast cancer, a group of locals hiked to raise money to prevent it.

When it comes to fundraising efforts for breast cancer causes, it’s the passion, the sisterhood, the tireless efforts and the pink tidal wave that seems to push millions of volunteers into action.
