The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair saw another successful festival in 2012. Festivities ended Saturday night.
The 64th annual Montgomery County Agricultural Fair came to a close Saturday night as volunteers dismantled rides, cleaned up the barns, closed up stands and said goodbye to one another until next summer. The county fair held at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds saw an estimated 220,000 guests, about the same number as last year, according to Martin Svcrek, the executive director of the Montgomery County Agricultural Center, Inc. Great weather conditions welcomed festival-goers throughout most of the week, except for a few rainstorms and a power outage. Running the fair required many volunteers, an estimated 2,000 to 2,400 volunteer hours, according to Gerda Sherwood from Laytonsville, herself a volunteer at the Dairy Barn. Sherwood said …

Adventist HealthCare officials, joined by Shady Grove Hospital personnel and local elected officials, broke ground Wednesday morning on what will become Montgomery County's first free-standing, comprehensive cancer center. Called the Aquilino Cancer Center, the 50,000-square-foot, three-story building will offer personalized, expert care to cancer patients with up-to-date technology and support services to treat various forms of cancer. It's slated to open on the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital campus in 2013. The driving force behind the project, said Shady Grove Hospital president Dennis Hansen, was better care for people battling cancer in the hospital's community. Jane Peck, Hansen's colleague, said she believes it will do that and more…

Gary Giordano, a Gaithersburg resident, was found naked with a woman inside a vehicle.
A man suspected in the disappearance of a woman in Aruba was arrested for indecent exposure in Annapolis last week. At around 6 p.m. Friday, two bike patrol officers responded to a report of sexual activity in a vehicle at the Noah Hillman garage, police said. 18-year-old Gonzalo Aldofo Quevedo-Garcia of Gaithersburg was charged on December 21 with one count of peeping tom and one count of visual surveillance with prurient intent stemming from an incident earlier in December at the Westfield Montgomery Shopping Mall. On December 10, a 24-year-old female contacted the police after an interaction with Quevedo-Garcia at the Guess store at Westfield Montgomery. The victim was approached by the suspect, who assisted her in locating pairs of blue jeans and a fitting room to try them on. She was asked several times by Quevedo-Garcia if she needed further assistance, which she declined. The victim then noticed Quevedo-Garcia’s shoes and a cellphone on the floor close to the fitting room door. The victim…

Parking lots are seeing a somewhat slow start to U.S. Open week.
The U.S. Open hordes have begun their descent on Gaithersburg, so far amounting only to a pale premonition of the many thousands of vehicles expected to throng this week to parking lots at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds and Crown Farm. The fleet of 80 buses lined up at the fairgrounds this morning began shuttling spectators to Congressional Country Club at 6 a.m. for the tournament’s opening day. By 9 a.m., roughly half of the 4,000-plus parking spots were taken as the 30th bus of the day embarked on its hour-long trip to Bethesda and back. Tournament play doesn't tee off until Thursday; the first three days are only practice rounds for the 156 players. "This isn’t a good idea of what we’re going to get," said Zach Adler, a manager for …

I did not like the Fair. It was my first time and I will never go back. The parking fee was outrageous, since we also had to pay a $10.00 admissions fee. Kids 11 and under could get in free, which was good. However, there was no discounts for seniors. Food prices were outrageously high and the games were rigged. That was on the news. I thought the animals were poorly kept. I saw the goats and …   more ›
