Gallery B to Showcase Local Artists in May Exhibit

Bethesda’s Gallery B’s May exhibition features work by local artists, as well as a collaborative piece to be sold for charity.

Gallery B’s May exhibition includes pieces from seven local artists who, in addition to their individual works, will contribute to a group piece to be auctioned off during the month. The exhibition, called “Seven Variations and a Conversation,” features seven artists from Dupont Circle’s Foundry Gallery: Fran Abrams, Nancy Donnelly, Naomi Taitz Duffy, Judy Gilbert Levey, Donna K. McGee, Robert Wiener and Patricia Zannie. Several of the contributors are from the area; Levey is an oil painter from Bethesda, Abrams works on polymer clay out of Rockville and Wiener is a Washington, DC, native who owns a private art glass studio. Bethesda Art Walk Set For Friday

This month’s Art Walk coincides with the opening of “Fair Focus,” Gallery B’s April exhibition.

Gallery B is holding an opening reception Friday for its April exhibition, which residents can enjoy as part of the monthly Bethesda Art Walk. “Fair Focus,” which will be on display until April 27, will include “substantive, museum quality contemporary artwork,” according to a statement from the Bethesda Urban Partnership. Some of the artists have also had their work featured at the Smithsonian Institution, the National Museum of African Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. One of the featured artists, Maya Freelon Asante, of Baltimore, was recently featured in DC Magazine’s “Best of the City” and the Huffington Post’s “Black Artists: 30 Contemporary Art Makers under 40 You Should Know.” Asante is known for her work with tissue quilts, and…

Bethesda, Potomac Artists Featured in Gallery B’s January Exhibition

Bethesda and Potomac residents are among the local artists whose work is featured in this month’s Gallery B exhibition, and you can check out their work at an opening reception during Friday’s Art Walk. The January exhibition features artwork by Alice Kresse of Bethesda, Susan Tibolla Gray of Potomac, Patricia Affens of Olney, and Ceci Cole McInturff and Maya Ormsby of Washington, DC. Kresse is a graphic designer, art director and jewelry designer who recently returned to printmaking after a 30-year hiatus, according to a statement from the Bethesda Urban Partnership. Gallery B To Showcase Work of Late Artist

Jude Nagel, artist and former Montgomery Blair art teacher and department chair, died in 2011.

Gallery B will showcase the work of late artist and former Montgomery Blair art teacher Jude Nagel during a December exhibition. Nagel was a fixture in the Washington, DC area arts scene, and her paintings and mixed media have been shown at galleries including Target Gallery, Black Rock Center for the Arts, Torpedo Factory, Watergate Gallery and The Circle Gallery. Nagel was also affiliated with Washington's IFA gallery, according to a Bethesda Urban Partnership announcement, and exhibited and sold work through galleries in New York City and in the Southwest. Nagel died of melanoma in 2011 at age 73, according to an obituary published in The Washington Post. She was born in Logansport, Ind., and raised in Washington, graduating from …

Bethesda Art Walk Set For Friday

This month's Art Walk will be held in conjunction with the opening reception for the Trawick Prize 10th Anniversary Exhibition.

It’s the second Friday of the month, so that means downtown Bethesda art galleries will keep their doors open late for the Bethesda Art Walk. Participating galleries will showcase local, national and international artwork in a variety of media from 6-9 p.m. This month’s Art Walk will be held in conjunction with an opening reception for the Trawick Prize 10th Anniversary Exhibition at Gallery B. The special group exhibition and competition is underway to showcase the work of the artists who have taken "Best in Show" for the Trawick Prize, an annual contemporary art competition founded in 2003, over the past 10 years. Baltimore, DC Artists Named Trawick Prize 10th Anniversary Winners

Baltimore artist Jo Smail took home the Sapphire Award and $10,000; DC artist Mia Feuer honored as "People's Choice" winner.

Baltimore artist Jo Smail has taken home the Sapphire Award and $10,000 after being named the “best of the best” of Trawick Prize winners over the past 10 years. The Trawick Prize is an annual juried contemporary art competition, founded by Bethesda community activist and philanthropist Carol Trawick in 2003. To celebrate the competition’s 10th anniversary, a special group exhibition is underway at Gallery B to showcase the work of the artists who have taken "Best in Show" for the past 10 years. The Sapphire Award Competition and Exhibition was produced by Trawick and the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District to honor the winners. Fraser Gallery Returns To Bethesda For October Exhibit

Gallery will return to its former storefront location to exhibit the work of artist David FeBland.

The Fraser Gallery, which closed its Bethesda storefront location last year, is set to return to Bethesda to host an exhibit by New York City-based artist David FeBland. The exhibition is slated for Oct. 3 through Oct. 28 at Gallery B. Now a community art gallery operated by the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District and the Bethesda Urban Partnership, Gallery B is the Fraser Gallery’s former downtown Bethesda location. Fraser Gallery founder Catriona Fraser was among several Bethesda gallery owners who closed their doors following the economic downturn. $14,000 Awarded To Trawick Prize Winners

Winning artists of juried contemporary art competition are announced at a Wednesday evening reception.

The winners of the annual Trawick Prize juried contemporary art competition are in, and $14,000 in prize money has been awarded to the top District, Maryland and Virginia artists. The four winners were announced during a Wednesday evening reception. “Best in Show” – and $10,000 – was awarded to Baltimore artist Lillian Bayley Hoover. David D’Orio, of Mt. Ranier, took second place and $2,000, and Washington, DC, artist Dean Kessmann won third and $1,000. Richmond, VA, artist Hannah Walsh took the “Young Artist” award and was honored with $1,000. Gallery B Lease Extended Through December 2013

Artists can apply for month-long exhibits at the community art gallery from January through December of next year.

The future is looking bright for Gallery B. The community art gallery, which has operated successfully since opening in October of 2011, has seen the lease for its Wisconsin Avenue space extended through December of 2013, according to Bethesda Urban Partnership spokeswoman Stephanie Coppula. BUP, which operates the gallery along with the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District, is seeking artists and curators interested in applying for month-long exhibits there from January through December of next year. “The lease was initially going to expire at the end of September 2012,” Coppula said.
