Would You Cross the Potomac for Cheaper Gas?

A potential increase in the Maryland gas tax and the elimination of a gas tax in Virginia could trigger migration.

Would the promise of cheaper gas get you to cross the Potomac? Maryland's legislature will consider raising the gasoline tax for the first time in 20 years this session, Patch reported in December. In response, drivers might head south to "fill up in Virginia," a representative from AAA said. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell could make the drive across the Potomac even more enticing, with the announcement that he will seek to eliminate his state's $0.175-per-gallon gasoline tax, according to a recent Washington Examiner story. While the disparity between gas prices in Maryland and Virginia currently is almost $0.13 per gallon, that gap could widen to as much as $0.35 per gallon if Maryland raises its gas tax and Virginia eliminates its tax, The…

Customers Rush Gas Stations Following Storm

Some gas stations saw long lines of cars over the weekend, while others suffered losses and continue to wait for power to return.

Friday night’s storm affected Maryland residents and business owners in different ways, but just about everyone felt the need to get a full tank of gas. Over the weekend, gas stations that had power were flooded with cars looking for both gas and ice.  Jim Kurtz, the owner of a Takoma Park Shell station on New Hampshire Avenue, said his station saw a tremendous increase in drivers looking to get gas on Saturday and Sunday.  “We had lines down the street all day Saturday and Sunday,” he said. “We usually use around four tankers of gas (8,800 gallons each) during the week, and last week we used six.” Kurtz said the station ran out of gas on Saturday by around 6 p.m., was refueled Sunday morning and ran out again by Sunday night. He says he…

Gas Prices Decline in Time for Independence Day

Your trip to the beach for the 4th may not cost as much in gas as you expect.

As you prepare to take your summer vacations and Fourth of July trips, you’re probably bracing yourself for how much your drive to the beach will cost. The good news is it may not be as much as you expect -- or at least not as much as it used to be.  According to AAA’s daily fuel gauge report, the average national cost of gas was about $3.53 per gallon, the Maryland state average cost was $3.32 per gallon and the average for the D.C. suburbs was $3.35 as of early this morning.  These costs have been steadily declining since the nation experienced a peak average price in April at $3.94 per gallon, AAA Mid-Atlantic says. In addition, the national average has decreased by $0.19 per gallon, the Maryland state average has decreased by $0.26 per…

Speak Out: Are You Driving this Memorial Day Weekend?

AAA projects more than 34 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles away from home this weekend.

As families gear up for the official welcome of summer, AAA is projecting that more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home during Memorial Day Weekend. The travel club says the number of travelers is projected to increase by more than 500,000 from last year. More people will be on the roads instead of in the air this year, according to AAA. More than 30 million plan to drive to their destinations, up 1.2 percent from the number who drove last year. According to The Washington Post, retail gas prices dropped by a penny to a national average of $3.71 per gallon last Friday after a spike in April. The weaker demand is also helping to push down prices, The Post added. “The overall domestic economic picture …

How High Will Gas Prices Soar This Spring?

Prices at the pump have already jumped 45 cents a gallon since Jan. 1, 2012.

It's almost springtime and gas prices are, once again, creeping close to the $4-a-gallon mark, with some forecasters suggesting that prices could top $5 a gallon in the not-too-distant future. Prices at the pump have already jumped 45 cents a gallon since Jan. 1, 2012. At this time last year, this writer regularly drove around Chevy Chase and parts of Bethesda looking for the least expensive places to fill up the mini-van. Almost always, the excursions ended at the W-Express Station on River Road in Bethesda. This gas-consuming exercise is no longer necessary thanks to Patch's handy gas price search widget. But the same questions persist: What's behind the recent flurry of price hikes—Iran and rising tensions in the Persian Gulf? …
