MOM's? Whole Foods? Dare we say...Wegman's? With a Harris Teeter and an as-yet-to-be-named market coming in to the Woodmont Triangle, we want to see what you think.
Grocery news is big news in Bethesda, and with a Harris Teeter now signed on at a new mixed-use development at 8300 Wisconsin Ave., we’re turning our attention to another market that’s planned for a new building just a few blocks south. Developers JBG are planning a 444,000 square-foot residential building with 475 units and more than 20,000 square feet of ground-floor retail at 7900 Wisconsin Avenue. The development will stretch from Wisconsin to Woodmont at St. Elmo avenues. The modified development, formerly planned to be the site of the new Bethesda police station, will go before the Montgomery County Planning Board Feb. 14. The building will feature a through-block open space that will pass beneath a portion of the building, with …

No big changes are planned for the store by the new owner, The Northwest Current reported.
More good news for fans of the recently sold Magruder's store in Chevy Chase, DC: Not only is the store not closing—it's also not changing all that much, either, The Northwest Current reported. The store—which consists of a liquor store, deli and farmers market—was bought by Ki Yoon, who will keep the same product mix. The only upgrades planned are for things like new carpeting and fixtures, The Current reported on pages 1 and 26 of its Jan. 23 issue. Yoon told The Current that he worked hard to keep the Magruder's name. "It's a D.C. tradition—a great store that has served customers for decades," he told The Current. Even more: All of the employees will stay on at the store, The Current added. Read more about the store's transition to new …

The Connecticut Avenue Magruder's liquor store in DC has been sold and will continue to operate under the Magruder's name.
Magruder's is closing all of its supermarkets—including its Chevy Chase store (at 5626 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC) and its Montgomery County locations in Gaithersburg and Rockville. A letter available at the customer service desks of Magruder's locations said the Connecticut Avenue Magruder's liquor store in DC has been sold and will continue to operate under the Magruder's name. "We are currently in negotiations to sell the remaining four locations to a group who wishes to purchase the individual stores and reopen them as quickly as possible and we are working diligently with all parties involved," Magruder's Vice President Gary Bortnick wrote in the letter. The letter thanked the store's employees, unions, vendors and customers…
All four of the chain's locations, including in Rockville and Gaithersburg, will be sold, Gaithersburg Patch reports.
A familiar name in the Montgomery County supermarket scene is selling all four of its stores, Gaithersburg Patch reports. The two Montgomery County stores, in Rockville and Gaithersburg, were seeing a run on items discounted by 50 percent Wednesday. "We are currently in negotiations to sell the remaining four locations to a group who wishes to purchase the individual stores and reopen them as quickly as possible and we are working diligently with all parties involved," Magruder's Vice President Gary Bortnick wrote in a letter. The neighborhood grocery store packs a range of local, national and imported products into 25,000 square feet.
Kevin and Jason Kirsch are the busy owners of the Chevy Chase Supermarket. While supervising maintenance of a checkout counter, fielding phone calls, greeting customers and overseeing the everyday tasks of maintaining a grocery store, they still make the time to listen to small companies looking to sell their products in their store. “We work under the theory that small businesses should support each other,” Kevin Kirsch told Patch. Their open door policy means that they will listen to a company’s pitch at any time before noon, to determine whether their grocery store would be a good fit for the company’s product. The product could need a new ingredient, labels, bar codes or PVC codes before the Kirsch brothers would be willing to open …

Is another grocery store needed in Bethesda?
Update, 5:45 p.m.: Responding to a request for comment for this story, Stonebridge principal Douglas Firstenberg told Patch in a voicemail message Wednesday afternoon, "In terms of 8300 Wisconsin, we do have plans for a grocery store at the project but we have not made any public comment on who that might be." Original Post, 10 a.m.: Harris Teeter, rapidly-expanding in the Washington, D.C. metro area, may be opening a large grocery store on Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda within the next two years. The new 50,000-square-foot grocery store will be at the corner of Wisconsin and Battery Lane, part of the development being mapped by StonebridgeCarras at the site of the former Trillium project. The grocery chain announced last Thursday that it would stop stocking beef products containing an additive know as "pink slime."
"Pink slime" no more—for local Giant and Safeway stores. Giant Food, a top regional grocery chain based in Landover, declared last Thursday that it would stop selling meat with a finely-textured beef additive also known as "pink slime." The company is among a number of stores that have stopped carrying the product because of customer concern. Food regulators, however, say pink slime passes food safety standards. Giant released a statement last Thursday saying: "While [the U.S. Department of Agriculture] has indicated this product is safe for consumption and complies with all applicable standards for lean beef, many of our customers have voiced concern regarding Finely Textured Beef," the company said in a statement. "We value the trusted …
