March was a big month in food. Patch broke the news that Bethesda's first full-service rooftop restaurant and bar will be dubbed 'Roof,' and more than 100 readers recommended our story on Facebook. Indian restaurant displaced by a Bethesda development has found a new home just around the corner.
A favorite Bethesda Indian restaurant has re-opened in the Woodmont Triangle after being displaced by construction of a Fairmont Avenue high rise. Haandi has re-opened at 7907 Norfolk Avenue, in the former Uptown Deli space. The construction of a 17-story high-rise displaced the former Fairmont Avenue eatery, along with other Bethesda mainstays Sweet Basil and Foong Lin. Demolition at the high-rise project site is expected to start soon. Foong Lin was recently re-incarnated as the House of Foong Lin in the former Moon Gate space, Bethesda Magazine reported. Haandi co-owner Madan Sundriyal told Bethesda Now he was glad to find a nearby location and had hoped to stay in Bethesda to serve his loyal patrons.

The buildings that formerly housed restaurants including Bethesda mainstay Foong Lin are set to come down.
Demolition on a residential high-rise at 4900 Fairmont Avenue is expected to launch in January, according to Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center director Ken Hartman. The structures set to come down at the project site include the buildings that formerly housed restaurants Foong Lin, Haandi and Sweet Basil. Foong Lin, a mainstay at the corner of Fairmont and Norfolk Avenues, closed this summer after 25 years in the Woodmont Triangle. Haandi is set to take over the former Uptown Deli space, Bethesda Magazine's Table Talk blog reported. Uptown Deli on Norfolk Avenue has closed, and the Indian restaurant Haandi will soon take over the space, Bethesda Magazine’s Table Talk blog reported. Haandi will close its Fairmont Avenue location on Aug. 31 ahead of the groundbreaking of a 17-story high-rise that will have 236 rental units, 6,500 square feet of ground floor retail and more than three levels of below-grade parking. Sweet Basil and Foong Lin also will close ahead of the Fairmont Avenue construction. Haandi co-owner Madan Sundriyal told Table Talk that Uptown Deli closed on Aug. 14. I don't know what planet Joe is living on, but it isn't Earth! Haandi's food is FABulous! We've never been disappointed there, and often have been ecstatic about whatever we've ordered. Their Sunday brunch buffet (and weekday lunch buffet), which I hope will continue, allows a chance to sample dishes I might not have ordered from the menu. Good service and a pleasing ambiance too!
