Hanukkah 2012 in Chevy Chase

Celebrate the Festival of Lights with fun events.

This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8, and ends a week later on Sunday, Dec. 16. According to Chabad.org, Hanukkah starts on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev and lasts for eight days. For those of us who aren't attuned to the Jewish calendar, that translates to sundown on Saturday, Dec. 8. Local events include: The national Menorah lighting takes place on Dec. 9. This national celebration of the beginning of Hanukkah features the United States Navy Band, children’s activities and the lighting of the National Menorah. This event is free, reservations required. Bethesda Row, Cabin John Shopping Center Lead Hanukkah Celebrations

Check out what's on tap this year at the Bethesda Row Hanukkah Spectacular and the Cabin John Shopping Center menorah lighting.

Balloon menorahs, live music, hot latkes and celebrities will lead the 5th annual Bethesda Row Hanukkah show this year. Katie Balloons, balloon artist and star of the TLC series The Unpoppables, will join Rabbi Sender Geisinsky of the Chabad of Bethesda-Chevy Chase to host "Chanukah Balloonarama" at 5:30 p.m. Sunday on Bethesda Lane. The event is free and open to the public and includes a balloon show with souvenirs for children, live music, hot latkes, chocolate coins and more, according to a press release. Meanwhile, the Cabin John Shopping Center in Potomac will host a community Hanukkah menorah lighting celebration titled "Light the Night," from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Try These Hanukkah Recipes During the Festival of Lights

Make these brisket, latke and sufganiyot recipes for Hanukkah.

This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8 and ends on the evening of Sunday, Dec. 16. Check out this post for a list of local Hanukkah observations. Observing the Festival of Lights goes hand-in-hand with making special Hanukkah foods. Before you light the menorah, make sure you have all the ingredients for some great brisket, latke, and sufganiyot. Although there are many recipes, below are a few to try during the eight nights. Celebrities, Local Chabad Lead Bethesda Row Hanukkah Celebration
