Despite defeating the Falcons 3-2 in overtime on Monday, Whitman Coach Dave Greene sees plenty of room for improvement.
Monday evening in Bethesda featured a match-up on the soccer field between the boys teams of Walt Whitman and Poolesville High Schools. The Whitman boys are the defending state champions, and bring with them an annual expectation of success on the pitch. This season has been far from successful for the former-champion Vikings, who have yet to play with a level of cohesiveness necessary to win consistently, let alone defend their state title. Whitman's record of 1-6-1 entering the game was only slightly better than Poolesville's 0-7 mark. It took an overtime period to put away the Falcons, but Jonathan Merhez's goal in the period's second minute, his third of the day, sealed the match at a final score of 3-2. The B-CC girls soccer team was defeated by Walter Johnson 1-0 on Wednesday.
Having won two straight state championships, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase girls soccer team is feared throughout the entire region. According to Walter Johnson coach Elizabeth Friedman, the Barons are so accomplished that is it tough to train a team to face them. "I'm not sure you can fully prepare for a team that is as solid and smart as they are," she said. Despite her doubt, Friedman was able to do just that, as her WJ Wildcats (5-1) defeated visiting B-CC (2-2) on Wednesday by a final score of 1-0. Granted, her cause was aided by a fierce lightning storm which terminated the match two minutes and 31 seconds early. The 77 and a half minutes that were completed however, tipped slightly in favor of the home squad. The Barons controlled …
