Bethesda Film Fest Documentary Selections Announced

Five films from local filmmakers will be screened March 23 as part of the inaugural Bethesda Film Fest.

Get your popcorn ready. Five documentary shorts have been selected to be screened as a part of the inaugural Bethesda Film Fest, organized by the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District. The five films were chosen from submissions by filmmakers across the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC region. The selection panel included Angelica Das, associate director of the Center for Social Media at American University’s School of Communication; Imagination Stage director of digital media David Stern, and members of the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District Board of Directors. Save the Date: ImagiFest 2012

Bethesda's Imagination Stage will open its doors to kids and families.

Parents, save the date: Imagination Stage’s ImagiFest 2012 is set for Sept. 8. The downtown Bethesda professional children’s theater will open its doors during the free event, dubbed “Suess on the Loose.” Kids and their families will be lead on an interactive journey through the building, featuring scenic installations of productions in the theater’s 2012-2013 season. The catch? The Cat in the Hat has tricked all the characters into thinking they’re in a Dr. Suess tale, and kids will be tasked with saving the stories. ImagiFest will also feature a dance party, a DIY chalk graffiti wall, show previews, backstage access and sample classes in theater, music and dance. Children’s Theater Seasons Launch at Adventure Theatre, Imagination Stage

Expect upbeat performances with Imagination Stage's Aladdin's Luck and Adventure Theatre's Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse.

Adventure Theatre’s 60th anniversary is off to a delightful start with its production of Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, directed by Nick Olcott and based on the book by Kevin Henkes. Mouse Lilly is the queen of everything. So she says and so Helen-Hayes nominee Felicia Curry plays her -- larger than life. The kids in the audience eat up Lilly’s over-the-top theatrics, but Chester (S. Lewis Feemster) and Wilson (Elliott Kashner) are also crowd pleasers as her best friends. Chairs are used cleverly in the production, such as in the marvelously constructed costume and bassinet combo occupied by Lilly’s new baby brother, Julius (Troy Jennings), the bane of her existence.
