What does this holiday mean to you and how will you celebrate?
Monday, Jan. 21, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For some, the national holiday honoring the prominent civil rights activist is a time to give back and serve the community, be it through removing graffiti or picking up litter in a local park. For others, it’s an opportunity to educate themselves about King and his life's work. And for others, it’s a time to just kick back and enjoy the prolonged weekend. Manna Food Drive in Martin's Additions The Village of Martin's Additions will be collecting shelf-stable food for Montgomery County's Manna Food Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. A donation table will be staffed by volunteers in front of the Brookville Supermarket (7027 Brookville Rd., Chevy Chase). Cash donations also will be accepted …

Where to party and what to drink during the 2013 inauguration celebration.
America’s 57th presidential inauguration is just around the corner, and for Washington-area residents, that means a party to rival all parties. Next week in DC may look like New Year’s Eve-Meets-Mardi Gras, with the Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration permitting of some businesses to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. all week. Washingtonian magazine has a list of DC bars staying open late for inauguration festivities. In Montgomery County, the inaugural weekend is a little more low key. Fewer bars and restaurants are advertising inauguration specials, though for Mussel Bar in Bethesda, inauguration begins with an Obama-tini cocktail. From Jan. 18 through 21, customers can sample the drink—“Ketel One vodka, Hypnotiq liqueur and a float of …

Your guide to how two major events will affect the local area.
For only the second time in history, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the public ceremony for the presidential inauguration will occur on the same day: Jan. 21, 2013. Ronald Reagan's second inauguration also coincided with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on Jan. 21, 1985. The 20th Amendment (ratified in 1933) to the U.S. Constitution changed the beginning of the presidential term from March 4 to Jan. 20, so the president will be sworn in privately on Sunday, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies reported on its website. While traveling into the district this Monday will be more complicated than usual due to road closures, Metro station closures and a number of no-parking zones, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is a federal…

My husband and I had tickets in the red section and the man was pretty far away from us but insanely disruptive. People could not simply move away from him because there was no place else to move out of his earshot. I wish the police would have acted sooner. He was a nuisance, plain and simple. While I have mixed feelings about abortion considering the circumstances, I believe it's a private …   more ›
