A Maryland man surely has a different perspective on the tax changes the fiscal cliff may bring after winning the largest jackpot in the nine-year history of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa on Sunday, according to the Press of Atlantic City. The man, who asked not to be identified, was on vacation in Atlantic City, played a $5 “Wheel of Fortune” slot machine that offered a progressive jackpot, and won $3,843,951. How Stuff Works’ website states that the odds of hitting the jackpot on a three-wheel slot machine are 262,144 to 1. According to the IRS, gambling winnings are “fully taxable, and must be reported on your tax return.” In many cases, casinos will take 25 percent of your winnings for the IRS. The jackpot for Wednesday's Powerball drawing has climbed to a record $500 million after Saturday's drawing failed to produce a winner. The multi-jurisdictional lottery is played in 42 states—including Maryland and Virginia—plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game first arrived in the Old Line State in 2010. Saturday marked the 15th consecutive Powerball drawing without a winner. The jackpot for Saturday's Powerball drawing has climbed to $214 million after Wednesday's drawing failed to produce a winner, lottery officials report. The multi-jurisdictional lottery is played in 42 states—including Maryland and Virginia—plus Washington, DC, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Who wants to be a millionaire? The Powerball jackpot bumped up about $20 million today after anticipation built around the jackpot amount, according to a Maryland Lottery official. Spokeswoman Erica Palmisano said as the jackpot exceeded $300 million this morning, people started buying tickets – causing the payout to shoot up to $320 million and making it the fourth largest Powerball jackpot since it began in 1992. “Clearly people are very excited about it,” Palmisano said. “We’re hoping Maryland has a winner.” The odds for winning the pot are about 1 in 175 million, she said, and those odds don't change no matter how many people buy tickets. Just think of what you could do with $500 million (which is a lot of money, even for Chevy Chase...the actor). A winner in Friday's Mega Millions lottery drawing will get to do just that after no one picked the correct six numbers in Tuesday's drawing. The $500 million jackpot is considered to be the largest in Mega Million's history, according to WJLA and the odds at winning the jackpot are one in 176 million. Yes, let the man enjoy his winnings....if it were you, you sure as hell would't be giving it back to the machine. I would pay off some bills, enjoy a nice vacation, help some folks in need.
