Operators hope combining an intimate entertainment experience with quality food and parking will make the club a destination for a wide variety of music fans.
Tuesday morning, members of the media got a sneak peek of the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, the music venue that will open March 1 in the former Bethesda Theatre space on Wisconsin Avenue. Operators said they hope to “hit all the notes” with the highly-anticipated club—with parking, acoustics, food, service, ambiance and entertainment. The theater opened in 1938 as an art deco movie house, and was re-incarnated as an Off-Broadway production hub before a flood forced it to go dark in the middle of a run. The theater took a financial hit, struggling to stay open as a rental venue, until it was foreclosed upon in 2010. Proprietor Rick Brown, of B&B Realty Investments, bought the venue in February of 2012 for $2,895,000 and announced …

New venue hopes to attract a wide variety of entertainment acts.
The Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, set to take over the Bethesda Theatre, will likely open by early December, according to club proprietor Rick Brown. Following its renovation, the Wisconsin Avenue landmark will feature “300 seats for dinner, a beautiful new 40 foot bar and lounge and 200 additional performance seats,” according to the club’s website. “This is not a mosh pit or a stand-up concert venue, this is a sit-down venue [with] tablecloths, candlelight – it’s a very nice setting for high quality entertainment,” Brown said. The club will also feature a dance floor, Brown said. Director of Operations Ralph Camilli, who spent the last 15 years of his 35-year career booking and promoting entertainment at the Blues Alley, will be …

Singer Karen Gray brings stylish standards to Friday nights at Sala Thai.
Depending on the day of the week, you might find Karen Gray on stage in a dazzling sequined dress singing a Gershwin tune or officiating at a wedding in ministerial robes. Gray, who has for years had a standard Friday night gig at Sala Thai in Bethesda, is not only a jazz vocalist but an ordained interfaith minister and life coach. Gray had been with the local band Night & Day for a few years when in 2002 she first sang at Sala Thai’s Arlington restaurant. Later, owner Oy Changsila asked her to play every Friday at his restaurant in Bethesda. The popular chanteuse works with various musicians as The Karen Gray Trio; among the artists performing with her at Sala Thai have been bassist John Leonard and vibraphonist Pete Chauvette. Now it’s …

The annual event has become a tradition in the high school music community.
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Jazz Combo entertained customers at the Panera Bread in Friendship Heights Saturday evening. The event is a fundraiser for the school's music department. Marshall White teaches the instrumental groups at the school, including the combo. He said the fundraiser has been going on for about six or seven years, always the weekend of Thanksgiving. He said the funds from the event will help offset the cost of instrument repairs, bring in guest musicians and help pay for trips students in the music department take. White estimates the group will raise a couple hundred dollars form the event, but he said it's not about the money. "It's more to get out and play in the community," he said. "It's always good to get…
