Slavin Honored with Community Service Award at Boycotted Ball

Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin was honored for his community service at the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee's Spring Ball.

Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin crossed "the so-called 'picket line' " of people boycotting and protesting against the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee's Spring Ball on May 11 to receive the Rita Morgan-Bruce Jerney Community Service Award at the event. Protesters and boycotters were making a statement against a 2-year-old Montgomery County law that inhibits the power of county police leaders to negotiate decisions that effect rank-and-file officers.  Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown (D) joined in the protest/boycott, Rockville Patch reported. Slavin—a lifelong Democrat and a representative at last summer's Democratic National Convention—is no stranger to receiving awards for his philanthropic …

I hope he refuses to give any contributions to those who boycotted the event. I won't vote for any of them. The County needed that legislation, and any elected official with integrity instead of being a political hack would have known that.   more ›

Slavin Offers Special Scholarship for Leadership Workshop

Town of Somerset high school students are encouraged to apply for the scholarship, which is sponsored by Mayor Jeffrey Slavin.

Somerset high school students looking to develop (or fine-tune) their leadership skills have a unique opportunity this year—the chance to apply for a special scholarship to this summer's Maryland Leadership Workshop. Maryland Leadership Workshops have been held for more than 50 years. This summer's workshop for rising ninth-, 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students takes place July 28 through Aug. 3 at Washington College in Chestertown. Tuition is $695 if a student's complete application packet is received before April 1 and $795 if the application packet is received after April 1. One deserving student from the Town of Somerset will get to attend, free-of-charge, thanks to Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin, who is sponsoring a full scholarship. …

Mass Shootings on the Rise, Gun Violence Prevention Group Finds

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, in which the Town of Somerset's mayor is a member, released a report last week on gun violence in the U.S.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns—an organization in which Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin is a member—released a report last Friday with startling findings regarding gun violence. In the past four years, the report stated, mass shooting incidents have increased by 25 percent (to a total of 56). Other key findings of the report: "Mass shootings capture the public’s attention—and we should pass the common-sense reforms that will help to prevent these tragedies from occurring—but we should also remember that 33 Americans are killed every day, and very often by an intimate partner," Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said. "These findings challenge some of the conventional wisdom about mass shooting and highlight the areas …

To Mr. NR: Eric is not right. His comments are ridiculous, and not as you would call them, providing reasonable discourse. I am not uneducated, but as you say, let's stop the name calling, now that you got your little jab in. I challenge you to find a progressive liberal who thinks anything like Mr. Eric. Our gov. pays attn to the loudest mouth. That's why the NRA has had it's way for so long, …   more ›

Slavin on DNC: 'It's a Working Convention'

Jeffrey Slavin of Chevy Chase, and mayor of the Town of Somerset, is at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC, this week.

Chevy Chase and Bethesda residents watching the Democratic National Convention this week may see a familiar face in the crowd of delegates — that of Jeffrey Slavin, mayor of the Town of Somerset and a well-known philanthropist in Montgomery County and the Washington, DC, area.  To be a delegate to the convention, hopefuls must apply and then be elected. After that, they must be approved by campaign headquarters, Slavin explained to Patch. He estimated that about 1,000 people had requested the opportunity to be a delegate, but only about 100 were selected.  Slavin figured that the party's reasons for selecting him were that he's a first-time delegate, he's in the Jewish caucus, he represents the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender …

Elected Officials 'Teach for a Day'

State Delegate Jeffrey Waldstreicher likened the experience of being a teacher for a day to that of a tough workout at the gym—exhausting but exhilarating.

For those of us who aren't teachers—or who aren't related to teachers—it's easy to forget how hard teachers work. Waking up before dawn, after a late night of lesson preparations, isn't for the faint of heart—and neither is the teaching itself. But that didn't deter seven of Montgomery County's elected officials from spending May 10, 2012—from before dawn to near dusk—teaching, as part of the Montgomery County Education Association's first "Teach for a Day" program, "designed to honor local teachers and acknowledge the crucial role teachers play in making sure every student receives a quality education," according to a county statement. Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin spent the day co-teaching Jonathan Main's classes in government, …

Mayor Slavin Bikes, Rides Metro to Work

For Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 18, Chevy Chase Patch spoke with Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin about bicycle commuting.

When Mayor Jeffrey Slavin goes to work, the last thing he worries about is whether there's gas in the car. That's because he doesn't use a car to get to work. Instead, the mayor of the Town of Somerset, in Chevy Chase, rides the Metro or a bicycle. He commutes to his office in Rockville on the Metro, but doesn't take a bicycle with him on the trains during rush hour. For shorter commutes—such as to the gym or to the Town of Somerset Town Hall (where he presides over the town council as mayor), he uses the bike. "I try to use my bike as much as possible," said Slavin, who was honored as Philanthropist of the Year last fall by the Community Foundation for Montgomery County. And, when the Capital Bikeshare comes to Friendship Heights, "I'm …

He'd never make it in the District ! He should emulate Mayor Grey and have a Cadillac Escalade (with choice of colors) and a driver (armed to protect him from the honest citizens of the District) AND many hangers on in the second Escalade. Now both Escalades are gulping gas at about 12 mpg at taxpayer expense and the mere thought of taking the germ filled Metro would keep Mayor Grey up for weeks …   more ›

Mayor Slavin Honored as Philanthropist of the Year

The Community Foundation for Montgomery County honored Jeffrey Slavin, mayor of the Town of Somerset, as Philanthropist of the Year at a ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Round House Theatre.

To get a packed house with standing room only, a theater needs to put on a really good show... ...Or honor a really good person...like Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin. On Tuesday night, Nov. 15, Slavin was honored at Round House Theatre by The Community Foundation for Montgomery County as Philanthropist of the Year for his many charitable acts, which include: managing his family's charitable foundation, the Sanford and Doris Slavin Foundation; connecting possible donors to local charities and getting those donors to actually donate time and money toward helping the people of Montgomery County. "He's a natural leader in a subtle way. ... He brings people to the table and lets people participate in their own way," said Carol Trawick, of the …

Five Things to Know Today: May 19

It's Thursday, which means it's almost Friday...but before we get to Friday, here are five things to know today, Thursday, May 19.

Good morning, Chevy Chase! Here are five things of interest to Chevy Chase this morning: 1.) Today's weather will be more of the same sort of weather we've been experiencing this week. (No need to belabor those details here, but do note that we should be getting some clearing of the clouds by the weekend.) 2.) Nordstrom Rack opens today at 5333 Wisconsin Ave. In celebration of the opening, the first 1,000 customers will receive a complimentary Nordstrom Rack reusable tote as a gift with their purchase. Arrive extra early and enter an 8:45 a.m. drawing for a $2,000 "Race Through the Rack" shopping spree, in which the lucky winner will have 90 seconds to select up to $2,000 worth of merchandise. 3.) Westland Middle School performs "Alice in …
