Hometown swimming phenom won "Breakout Performance of the Year" and "Female Race of the Year" in swimming's version of the Academy Awards.

Bethesda's own gold medalist Katie Ledecky is a two-time winner in the "Golden Goggle" awards. Organized by the USA Swimming Foundation, the Golden Goggles—swimming's answer to the Academy Awards—honor the top performances in American swimming. At 15, Ledecky took gold during London's Summer Olympics in the women's 800m freestyle and broke an American record. Ledecky, who was the youngest member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, is a sophomore at the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. Organized by the USA Swimming Foundation, the Golden Goggles—swimming's answer to the Academy Awards—honor the top performances in American swimming. At 15, Ledecky took gold during London's Summer Olympics in the women's 800m freestyle. President Barack Obama told the couple-hundred athletes honored that he is the, "fan-in-chief," and, despite his late work hours, has "mastered the DVR," which allowed him to keep up with all the teams. Bethesda gold medalist Katie Ledecky, 15, was among the athletes to be honored Friday by President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. The White House event honored Olympic and Paralympic athletes, the Baltimore Sun reported. The Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart sophomore stunned the world as she swam to the gold in the women’s 800m freestyle at the Summer Olympics in London. With a finish in 8 minutes and 14.63 seconds, she broke a 23-year American record and just missed the world record of Britain's Rebecca Adlington, the Washington Post reported. Local Olympians Feted Upon Return from London

Officials honored Katie Ledecky, Julie Zetlin and Scott Parsons at a Friday rally at Bethesda Metro Center.

Local leaders honored Bethesda's three Olympians with a host of awards and proclamations at a high-energy rally Friday evening at Bethesda Metro Center. Kayaker Scott Parsons, rythmic gymnast Julie Zetlin and swimmer and gold medalist Katie Ledecky spoke to the crowd, signed autographs and thanked the community for their support. The event was hosted by NBC's Dan Hellie, who covered the Olympics from London. Community groups and leaders—including U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen (D), Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner (D-Dist. 1), the Greater Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce and the Bethesda Urban Partnership—took part.
