Once again, vodka brands top the list of of liquor sold in Montgomery County in 2012.
Since Patch launched in Montgomery County in 2010, we've stirred up year-end lists of the county's favorite liquor brands every year. The lists have made such a splash with readers that we decided to check back with the county's Department of Liquor Control to see which libations were lined up in our liquor cabinets in 2012. Diane Wurdeman, who works with the county retail stores, ranked the liquors by the volume sold, broken down into the most popular sizes, flavors or proofs within a brand, rather than the most popular brands overall. A big thanks to Wurdeman for her help! So, what was Montgomery County drinking in 2012? Once again, vodkas lead the list. Similar to 2011, vodka brands took seven of the top ten spots: Thirsty for more? …

Sales of distilled spirits have increased only .2 percent in Maryland since last year—far below the national average of 3.1 percent, according to figures stated in a recent Washington Post blog post. The post cites the Distilled Council of the United States, which linked the stagnating sales to the increase in taxes on alcohol—from 6 percent to 9 percent. The chief economist for the council, David Ozgo, is quoted as stating that “Maryland consumers are voting with their feet and making their purchases in Delaware.” A Capital News Service article reported that sales of distilled spirits near the border of Maryland and Delaware in Cecil County are down 57 percent. Do you venture to other states like Delaware to purchase alcohol?

Maryland ranks 47th in beer consumption in the U.S.
"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer," Abraham Lincoln said. Apparently, people in the tri-state area do not track with the 17th president of the United States, and select other beverages to meet national crises. Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia all rank in the bottom third of annual shipment and consumption of beer, according to a study from the Beer Institute, quoted by the Washington Business Journal. Since 2003, the Beer Institute has been tracking “Shipments of Malt Beverages and Per Capita Consumption by State” for persons 21 years and older across all 50 U.S. states and the District of …

Smirnoff Vodka once again tops the list.
About a year ago, Patch provided you with a list of the most popular liquor brands among Montgomery County residents in 2010. The list was so popular, we thought we'd check back with the county's Department of Liquor Control to see exactly what's been cluttering our liquor cabinets this past year. Diane Wurdeman, who works with the county retail stores, was once again able to dig up a list of the most popular liquor, this time for 2011. The list, determined by the volume sold, looks at top liquor items -- so, the most popular sizes, flavors or proofs within a brand, rather than the most popular brands overall. A big thanks to Wurdeman for her help! So what was Montgomery County drinking in 2011? A hint: Once again, vodka brands head up the…

Various brands of vodka crowd the list of the top sellers.
In the latest iteration of our end-of-the-year impromptu series, we wanted to take a look at what brands of liquor were the most popular among Montgomery County residents in 2010, so we turned to the county's Department of Liquor Control for some help. Diane Wurdeman, who works with the county retail stores, did a bit of digging for us and came up with this list. She thought the exercise was so interesting that she even gave us a few more than a top 10 list would have, so we have a top 14 list. In this case, "most popular" was determined by the volume (by case) that was sold of each brand in 2010, and the list is current as of Dec. 14. A big thanks to Wurdeman for her help in compiling the list. Drumroll please... 1) 1.75 liter Smirnoff …

Now THIS is the kind of reporting I can stand behind. Cheers! Is there a similar list for beer/wine? Wait, Aristocrat?! See, you close down the McDonald's on East-West Highway, and this is what you get! Teenagers buying horrible vodka on fake ids. I mean, who else would drink that lighter fluid? Ok, broke college kids, but they're getting it cheaper at Tick Tock in College Park.   more ›
