2 Years Later, Jayna Murray's Friends, Family 'Still Healing'

The body of the Lululemon employee was found inside the downtown Bethesda athletic store on March 12, 2011.

It was on March 12, 2011, that the body of Lululemon employee Jayna Murray, 30, was discovered in the back of the popular Bethesda Row athletic store. The murder case that unfolded would leave the Bethesda community at first in fear, and later in shock as the story of masked attackers offered to police by her co-worker, Brittany Norwood, unraveled. Norwood now stands convicted of murdering Murray, and will spend the rest of her life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors said Norwood cut, stabbed, and bludgeoned Murray more than 330 times after Murray discovered her attempting to steal a pair of yoga pants. Patch was on the scene that March Saturday two years ago, and we've followed the case in the months and years since…

Murray Family Bungee Jumps In Honor Of Slain Sister

Murray family speaks to Patch about celebrating Jayna Murray's life following an emotional homicide trial.

A year to the day after Jayna Murray bungee jumped from 191-foot Pacific Northwest Bridge south of Seattle to celebrate her 30th birthday, her family made the same jump in her honor. Murray, who would have turned 31 on Nov. 22, was killed at Bethesda’s Lululemon store March 11. Her co-worker, Brittany Norwood, was convicted last month in the homicide. Murray was known for her adventurous nature and encouraging others to push the limits of their comfort zone to accomplish their goals. Now, her family hopes to continue on that tradition in her spirit – both through her memorial foundation and in their own lives.  “I’m not a thrill seeker – I wouldn’t have done this if it weren’t to pay tribute to Jayna,” said Kate Murray, Jayna’s sister-in-…

Judge in Norwood Trial Strikes Some Photos from Opening Arguments

Two of three autopsy photos will not be allowed to be presented by the prosecution in opening arguments Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Only some hand-selected photos will be allowed for opening arguments Wednesday at the trial of Brittany Norwood, who is accused of killing her co-worker at the Bethesda Lululemon store, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Robert A. Greenberg said Tuesday. Norwood’s defense team objected to Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy using the photos, arguing that they would taint the jury’s ability to fairly hear the rest of the case. The photos are integral to building the case that Norwood used multiple weapons to kill Jayna Murray, McCarthy said. Of the photos McCarthy requested be used, the three most controversial were autopsy photos of Murray showing her skull. The prosecution cropped the photos to depersonalize them, McCarthy…

Slain Lululemon Employee Honored and Remembered

In his closing prayer, Reverend John Love shared a hope for peace: "Help me be calm in the face of the storm within me."

In a non-descript walk-up on Elm Avenue in the heart of Bethesda, members of the community, friends and colleagues quietly gathered Friday evening to remember and honor Jayna Murray, a Lululemon Athletica employee who was murdered March 11. Candles illuminated the bank of windows facing the street as those inside were led in prayer and meditation. And then, with candles in hand, they formed a procession and walked in silence towards Bethesda Row, stopping within view of where Murray met her demise. As they sang “Amazing Grace,” passers-by who ventured out in the balmy night air joined in — their numbers swelling to more than 75. “It’s really ripped into my soul — it’s so close,” Keith Day, of Bethesda, said. He didn’t know Murray and added…
