Chevy Chase Village Police Warn of Mailbox Scam

Leaving outgoing mail in your mailbox for your mail carrier to pick up may not be as safe as you think.

Leaving outgoing mail in your mailbox for your mail carrier to pick up might not be as safe as you think—especially if there are bills in the mail. Last month, a Chevy Chase Village resident reported a theft of outgoing mail left in the resident's mail slot, according to a Chevy Chase Village Police Department alert posted to the Chevy Chase Village website on Friday, Nov. 16. "The mail was left for the postal carrier, but it is believed that the outgoing mail was stolen before it was collected by the carrier," according to the alert. "The resident discovered the crime when he learned that a check from the outgoing mail had been altered and cashed by a thief," the alert added.
