Winter Weather Advisory In Effect Early Monday

The advisory lasts from 5 a.m. until noon in much of Maryland.

Much of Maryland—from the D.C. metro area to the Baltimore suburbs—is under a winter weather advisory Monday morning. The advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. until noon in Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, Howard and Montgomery counties, as well as Baltimore City, the National Weather Service announced Sunday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20s by midday, but morning commuters may encounter freezing rain mixed with sleet and possibly snow, according to the advisory. Only a trace of accumulation is expected. Winds from the south will gust to 10 to 15 mph, the advisory said. The precipitation "will cause travel difficulties," the advisory said. Drivers should use caution and "be prepared for slippery roads and limited" …

Gaithersburg Residents Stranded After Storm, Plea for Help

Residents cut off from emergency access describe a frustrating waiting game.

(UPDATED, 10:57 a.m., 7/3) -- Tammy Hartwell spent Monday night on the floor in her mother-in-law’s basement. The cool surface was one of the few comforts available to her while she waited for officials to remove a tree that left everyone on her block stranded, with no road access, no power and no water, she said. Like thousands of Montgomery County residents, Hartwell has been without power and other amenities since Friday’s storm. The destruction left by the powerful system prompted Gov. Martin O’Malley to declare a state of emergency, and the county to open cooling stations to beat the coinciding heat. Our main concern was that there was no emergency access for emergency vehicles should the need arise. Also, even after talking to actual people at Pepco, each time it was reported there was no record of previous reports.
