Slavin Honored with Community Service Award at Boycotted Ball

Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin was honored for his community service at the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee's Spring Ball.

Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin crossed "the so-called 'picket line' " of people boycotting and protesting against the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee's Spring Ball on May 11 to receive the Rita Morgan-Bruce Jerney Community Service Award at the event. Protesters and boycotters were making a statement against a 2-year-old Montgomery County law that inhibits the power of county police leaders to negotiate decisions that effect rank-and-file officers.  Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown (D) joined in the protest/boycott, Rockville Patch reported. Slavin—a lifelong Democrat and a representative at last summer's Democratic National Convention—is no stranger to receiving awards for his philanthropic …

I hope he refuses to give any contributions to those who boycotted the event. I won't vote for any of them. The County needed that legislation, and any elected official with integrity instead of being a political hack would have known that.   more ›

Mass Shootings on the Rise, Gun Violence Prevention Group Finds

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, in which the Town of Somerset's mayor is a member, released a report last week on gun violence in the U.S.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns—an organization in which Town of Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin is a member—released a report last Friday with startling findings regarding gun violence. In the past four years, the report stated, mass shooting incidents have increased by 25 percent (to a total of 56). Other key findings of the report: "Mass shootings capture the public’s attention—and we should pass the common-sense reforms that will help to prevent these tragedies from occurring—but we should also remember that 33 Americans are killed every day, and very often by an intimate partner," Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said. "These findings challenge some of the conventional wisdom about mass shooting and highlight the areas …

To Mr. NR: Eric is not right. His comments are ridiculous, and not as you would call them, providing reasonable discourse. I am not uneducated, but as you say, let's stop the name calling, now that you got your little jab in. I challenge you to find a progressive liberal who thinks anything like Mr. Eric. Our gov. pays attn to the loudest mouth. That's why the NRA has had it's way for so long, …   more ›

Slavin on DNC: 'It's a Working Convention'

Jeffrey Slavin of Chevy Chase, and mayor of the Town of Somerset, is at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC, this week.

Chevy Chase residents watching the Democratic National Convention this week may see a familiar face in the crowd of delegates — that of Jeffrey Slavin, mayor of the Town of Somerset and a well-known philanthropist in Montgomery County and the Washington, DC, area.  To be a delegate to the convention, hopefuls must apply and then be elected. After that, they must be approved by campaign headquarters, Slavin explained to Patch. He estimated that about 1,000 people had requested the opportunity to be a delegate, but only about 100 were selected.  Slavin figured that the party's reasons for selecting him were that he's a first-time delegate, he's in the Jewish caucus, he represents the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender community and he …
