Four Places to Travel on Memorial Day

Take a trip to the Delaware beaches, the Annapolis waterfront, Harpers Ferry or Gettysburg on Memorial Day.

Not everyone plans a getaway for Memorial Day weekend. But, if you don't want to be stuck in the house with the kids for three (whole) days, a solidly-planned day trip with the family may do you some good. A Day at the Delaware Beaches Being a native Delawarean, I will tell you that Delaware beaches are the best. (It's OK, I listed my biases in my profile.) But, seriously, the drive isn't too bad from our region, and there are lots of options once you get there—including the games and rides on the Rehoboth boardwalk, the outlet shopping, the bars in Dewey, the award-winning seafood and even just a good old picnic on one of the seven beaches. GALLERY: Arlington National Cemetery Preps for Memorial Day

Approximately 220,000 American flags will be placed on every headstone in the cemetery before Memorial Day.

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to flock to Arlington National Cemetery this week to pay their respects to the servicemen and servicewomen who have fought for our freedom. Thursday afternoon, in advance of Memorial Day, soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment started inserting 220,000 American flags in front of every headstone in the cemetery. The regiment is stationed at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington. The official Memorial Day observance is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday.   If you don't want to start - or end - your Memorial Day weekend festivities with a ticket, then you better buckle up. Police across Maryland will be strictly enforcing seatbelt laws over the Memorial Day weekend. "We will be looking for you and your passengers who aren’t buckling up properly and we will issue tickets to anyone not in compliance," according to a news release by the Maryland National-Capital Park Police. The Park Police will be focusing on nighttime enforcement on Beach Drive, Sligo Creek Parkway and Little Falls Parkway, during the holiday weekend, police said. AAA projects more than 34 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles away from home this weekend.

As families gear up for the official welcome of summer, AAA is projecting that more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home during Memorial Day Weekend. The travel club says the number of travelers is projected to increase by more than 500,000 from last year. More people will be on the roads instead of in the air this year, according to AAA. More than 30 million plan to drive to their destinations, up 1.2 percent from the number who drove last year. According to The Washington Post, retail gas prices dropped by a penny to a national average of $3.71 per gallon last Friday after a spike in April. The weaker demand is also helping to push down prices, The Post added. “The overall domestic economic picture …
