Two Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School freshmen planned a community race to raise money for a nonprofit food bank.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School's “Help the Hungry 5K” race kicked off May 5, and turnout was good for a first-time race, organizers said. Abigail Levine and Marie Caspard, B-CC freshmen and varsity cross-country runners, organized the event to share their passion for running by raising money for a good cause. The race was held from noon to 3 p.m., starting and finishing at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School's Chelton Road parking lot, and was open to the community. “We had about 56 registered runners and around 30 volunteers, so it was definitely a great turn out,” Caspard said. The winners of each age group received gift cards for their achievements. William Bone of Morganstown, WV, finished the race in 18 minutes, earning first place. …

From a library opening to Bike to Work Day, May means things to do throughout the county.
Montgomery County used Twitter to announce happenings throughout the county in May. A news release detailed seven events, from the 22nd Annual Affordable Housing Summit on May 10 in North Bethesda to the ribbon cutting for the new Betty Ann Krahnke Children's Library in Rockville, also on May 10. Latest from My Green Montgomery: The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection held an Earth Day stream clean up in the White Oak neighborhood of Silver Spring. More than 50 volunteers collected 100 bags of trash and 58 tires on Saturday, April 20. They also collected metal items including U. S. Navy synchro generator. Several volunteers also installed 48 “Don’t Dump” markers on storm drain inlets around the neighborhood. Partners in the clean up, which was held in conjunction with the Anacostia Watershed Society’s Earth Day Cleanups, also included the Eyes of Paint Branch, the Department of Parks, the Bridgestone America’s Spent Tire Community Clean-up Program and community volunteers, such as the White Oak Basketball …

Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Joshua Starr said he is disappointed in the County Executive's budget plan.
The amount of aid for county schools proposed by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett in his fiscal 2014 county budget plan falls short of what's needed, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Joshua Starr said Friday. Leggett's plan calls for a schools budget of $2.23 billion—an increase of $65.8 million, or 3 percent more than the budget approved for the current school year. "The County Executive's recommendation would fund 100 percent of the [school board]'s request," according to Leggett's budget proposal. More helpful would be a chart showing causation. Who was at fault? What were the pedestrians wearing. So far, the approach appears to be a scattergun approach of blaming the drivers. Today alone I observed dozens of pedestrians cutting through moving traffic.   more ›
