Summer’s coming. (Try to wrap your head around that idea while you wrap a scarf around your neck in this week’s freezing temperatures, but it’s true.) Now is the time to make sure your child’s summer is all it can be. Registration opened Tuesday for summer camps offered by the Montgomery County Department of Recreation. Montgomery Parks began accepting registration for its summer camps on Jan. 9. Together, the recreation and parks departments offer hundreds of affordably-priced camps focused on swimming, ice skating, tennis, theater, nature, robotics, golf and more, including overnight camps. Aside from summer break, winter break may be the most highly-anticipated event for kids during the school year. But for many parents it is also one of the most stressful. Finding care for children can be challenging. In Montgomery County, the Department of Recreation is offering a few different programs. Coach Doug Club Holiday Parents can select from the 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. half day program, or the full day program, which runs until 3:30 p.m. Located at Cabin John Middle School, the program is designed for children age 3 to 13, runs Dec. 26-28 and allows children to select from sports like soccer, basketball and kickball, or from non-competitive games and activities. Facilities such as pools and libraries with power will be open during normal business hours. A decision has not yet been made regarding July 4 celebrations.
County-sponsored recreational activities are canceled for Monday and Tuesday as widespread power outages continue following Friday's storm. The Montgomery County Department of Recreation has canceled all scheduled events, including summer camp programs through Tuesday. County facilities such as pools and libraries with power will be open during scheduled operating hours, but customers are encouraged to call ahead before visiting. All community activities scheduled at the Montgomery County Public Schools building are also canceled through Tuesday because nearly 140 schools are still without power. The county has not yet made a decision on 4th of July festivities such as fireworks and parades. An announcement should come Tuesday.
