Three years ago Thursday, Sgt. Hector I. Ayala of the Montgomery County Police Department died when responding to a call to help a fellow officer. A Montgomery County Police Department Facebook post Thursday remembered Sgt. Ayala and his sacrifice. Ayala's wife was pregnant with triplets at the time of his death. County lawmakers question how raises will affect the $134 million budget hole in fiscal year 2014.
Montgomery County police officers could notice a bump in their pay come July 1. Officers would get a 2.1 percent pay raise, their first in four years, under an agreement with the county ratified by the county police union. The Fraternal Order of Police announced the new contract Monday, The Washington Examiner reported. The announcement follows a pay raise tentatively secured recently by the county firefighters, the report said. All firefighters would receive 2.75 percent salary increases. Raises were also announced in February for county government employees who are members of the Municipal and County Government Employees Organization, the report said. State police: The man shot himself after being stopped for not wearing a seatbelt.
Update, 6:20 p.m., Jan. 20: Maryland State Police have identified the driver of the Ford Focus who police said fatally shot himself during a traffic stop on Interstate 270 on Friday afternoon as a 27-year-old Gaithersburg man. The man's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, police said in a news release Sunday. Montgomery County police have no plans to move a Jones Bridge Road speed camera that, a district court judge ruled, is improperly placed.
The Montgomery County Police Department has no plans to remove a speed camera in the 4300 block of Jones Bridge Road that a district court judge ruled was improperly placed. Officer Rebecca Innocenti told Patch that "there will be no specific changes made to the [speed camera] program" and there are "no plans to remove that camera in the area of Jones Bridge [Road]"—between Wisconsin and Connecticut avenues. The ruling resulted from a court session in which a $40 speeding fine—issued on Sept. 5, 2012, with the help of photos from the camera—was invalidated by District Court Judge John Moffett, according to a police department statement disputing the ruling. A district court judge has ruled that the speed camera in the 4300 block of Jones Bridge Road in Bethesda (between Connecticut and Wisconsin avenues) was improperly placed, according to the Montgomery County Police Department, which said it disagreed with the ruling. A woman was punched in the head after the suspects demanded cash, police said.
Three boys, ages 15 to 17, were charged in an attempted armed robbery on New Year’s Day in the White Flint area, Montgomery County police said Thursday. Officers responded to the 5800 block of Nicholson Lane in North Bethesda at 5:48 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a woman screaming. The 56-year-old woman left White Flint Mall and was walking along Nicholson Lane when three suspects approached her from behind and demanded cash, police said in a news release. One of the suspects punched the woman in the head, according to the release. When the woman screamed, the suspects fled. A Rockville man was in critical condition at Baltimore Shock Trauma.
Montgomery County police have identified five people taken to the hospital after a six-vehicle crash on Rockville Pike in Rockville on Friday. A Rockville man suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident, which closed Rockville Pike for nearly seven hours. For reasons still under investigation, a Volkswagen Tiguan traveling southbound in the 1200 block of Rockville Pike near Templeton Place around 10:28 a.m. crossed into northbound lanes, police said in a news release.
