#MoCo Online: Library Translation Services

Any guesses as to in how many languages the Ask-A-Librarian line offers assistance?

Montgomery County Public Libraries recently tweeted a link to information about the Ask-A-Librarian line for foreign speakers. County residents may ask questions in more than 150 languages through an interpreter. The county service includes: And more than 140 others! Questions may be submitted by phone, email or Twitter at the Ask-A-Librarian page.

Montgomery County Libraries Expand Borrowing Privileges

The changes will take effect Feb. 17.

Do you use the Bethesda Library, Little Falls Library or any of Montgomery County's 20 other public libraries? If so, beginning Feb. 17, you will be able to do the following: “We want to continue to be responsive and accountable to our residents and users,” Montgomery County Public Libraries Director Parker Hamilton said in a statement. “By implementing these policy changes, MCPL will ensure that more materials will be in the hands of our customers, and not sitting on shelves. Barriers to customers who need more materials or need materials for a longer period of time will be removed.”

Library patrons will be able to check out more material and keep their items for longer after four changes go into effect later this month. Do you use the Chevy Chase Library or other Montgomery County public libraries? Libraries Host Voter Registration

Registration drives will be held throughout February around Montgomery County.

Maryland's primary elections are less than two months away. If you have yet to register to vote, now is the time. Voter registration drives will be held at public libraries around the county over the next three weekends as follows: The registration deadline for the April 3 primary election is March 13. The deadline for the Nov. 6 general election is Oct. 16. Click here for more information about voter registration. In addition, the county’s elections board is seeking elections judges, especially those who speak Spanish. Montgomery County Marks 60 Years of Library Service

Libraries avoided the deepest of budget cuts in May, got a little help from their 'Friends' on Friday.

Montgomery County Public Libraries commemorated 60 years of serving county residents with a celebration on Friday evening at the Rockville Memorial Library. The celebration presented "a great opportunity to thank our volunteers and to thank our staff,” even in the midst of a tough year for the library system, said Parker Hamilton, the system's director.  The libraries' budget of $28.5 million for fiscal 2012, which begins July 1, is a decrease of $2.8 million, or a 1.6 percent cut from the current budget. MCPL will lose 14 positions under the county's fiscal 2012 operating budget, which was approved on May 26. Despite the funding decrease and position reduction, library officials were grateful for being spared even deeper cuts by the …

Chevy Chase Library Faces Possible Staff Cuts

County Executive Isiah Leggett’s proposed budget cuts will eliminate 32 positions in county libraries.

Never underestimate the power of local citizenry to effect change. A group of ardent book lovers hopes to do just that. It didn’t matter that their regular meeting space at the Chevy Chase Library was occupied. The kitchen in the back of the library, with its small table and homey feel, would have to do. Time is of the essence when a neighborhood library is on the chopping block. Members of the Library Advisory Committee for Chevy Chase and the Friends of the Library, Chevy Chase Chapter met March 16, and County Executive Isiah Leggett’s proposed budget cuts occupied much of the conversation. “We are the library board.
