National Gallery's East Building Will Close for 3 Years

A rooftop sculpture garden is part of a renovation planned for the landmark modern art gallery.

The National Gallery of Art has unveiled plans for a $30 million renovation of its East Building, The Washington Post reported. The renovations include more than 12,000 square feet of additional space for exhibits as well as a rooftop sculpture garden. Earl A. Powell III, the National Gallery’s director, told The Post that the renovation is a "gift to the nation" in service to the gallery's world-class modern art collections, which will be viewed in a "spacious, airy and contemplative" environment. Schematic Designs Unveiled for Museum at Josiah Henson Site

A new visitor center with a multimedia theater and interactive exhibits is planned to bring to life the story of Rev. Josiah Henson, who inspired the novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin."

Montgomery Parks officials Monday night unveiled schematic designs for a museum at North Bethesda’s Josiah Henson park, the site of a former plantation where the man whose autobiography inspired “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” lived and worked as a slave. Parks officials, architects and designers said they envisioned interactive exhibits where the story of the Rev. Josiah Henson’s life—and the story of slavery in Maryland—would come to life. The plans include a rehabilitation of the historic Riley/Bolten house—which, between 1800 and 1850, served as the main farmhouse on the plantation of the brothers George and Isaac Riley. The plans also include a new visitor center (including a multimedia theater) on property bordering the historic site and …

Do the kids whine when you want to take them to another Washington, DC, museum? Check the traffic—if Interstate 95 isn't too backed up, try these museums in Baltimore. All of them are located around the Inner Harbor within easy walking distance of parking, transit, food and shopping. National Pinball Museum: This museum opened earlier this year in the chocolate factory building near Power Plant Live. But as an attraction, it's probably more pinball than museum. The 12,000-square-foot location features more than 100 machines open to play. Port Discovery: This summer, Port Discovery features a traveling exhibit all about the adventures of Mr. Potato Head. That's something to keep a loose plastic eye on. The museum also features summer …
