The final 18 inpatients were transferred from Walter Reed to NavyMed Saturday morning.
In advance of the impending Hurricane Irene, the final 18 inpatients from Walter Reed Army Medical Center were transferred to Bethesda's National Naval Medical Center Saturday morning. The transfer marks the ongoing merger of the Walter Reed with NavyMed, which will soon be known as the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The merger is part of the federally-mandated Base Realignment and Closure process, which will bring 2,500 new employees to Bethesda and nearly double the amount of yearly visitors to one million. New bike lanes and an underground pedestrian walkway under Route 355 will help ease traffic congestion when the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center moves in with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda later this year.
When the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center opens in Bethesda this September—bringing with it 2,500 more employees and a half a million more visitors each year to the National Naval Medical Center campus—new transportation infrastructure will be in the works, thanks to $300 million in funds set aside by Congress last week to ease transitions brought about by federally-mandated Base Realignment and Closure activities. Montgomery County's Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Implementation Committee discussed goals for the group to pursue in the coming months. The committee is made up of stakeholders from the community and a variety of state and local agencies, as well as the Navy. They offer recommendations for the move of a portion of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., which is slated to relocate to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda next September. Because of the mid-term election, the county is unsure when Congress will act.
Congress has yet to allocate federal funds that would help pay for transportation improvements around the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. The funds would help mitigate gridlock issues due to Walter Reed Army Medical Center's relocation there, slated for September 2011. Montgomery County BRAC Coordinator Phil Alperson gave an update on the federal funds during Tuesday night's Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Implementation Committee.
