A pedestrian was left unconscious by a hit-and-run driver on Rockville Pike at Cedar Lane last Friday night.
A pedestrian was struck in a hit-and-run incident on Rockville Pike at Cedar Lane on Friday, April 19, at about 9:30 p.m., according to a Montgomery County Police Department news statement. The pedestrian, Michelle Eyre De Sam, 35, of Bethesda, was left unconscious by the collision. Another driver on Rockville Pike found her in the roadway, and police officers determined that a vehicle had struck her and left the scene, the statement reported. "De Sam was transported to a local hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries," and she is recovering in the hospital, the statement added. A bipartisan group of congressional members sends a letter to transportation secretary urging him to find ways to reduce fatalities.
Approximately 5,000 pedestrians and bicyclists are fatally struck by cars in the United States each year, representing a decrease of about 20 percent since the early '90s, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fatalities involving bicyclists and pedestrians represent a higher percentage of all roadway deaths now than in previous years, though, argued members of Congress in a letter urging federal transportation officials to enact safety measures they passed last year in the Moving Ahead in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). A pedestrian struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning at the intersection of Westport Road and Saratoga Avenue remained in serious condition Wednesday afternoon, according to a Montgomery County police news release. Alice Ann Winkler, 50, of the 5200 block of Saratoga Avenue in Chevy Chase, was walking near her home about 8 a.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a 2012 Toyota Sienna driven by Pablo Martinez Varela, police said. Varela, 51, also of the 5200 block of Saratoga Avenue, remained at the scene and provided information to investigators, the release said. Police: The woman suffered serious injuries and was flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma.
A woman was struck Tuesday morning while walking on Westport Road near Saratoga Avenue in Bethesda, Montgomery County police said. The woman suffered serious injuries and was transported via helicopter to Baltimore Shock Trauma, said Officer Rebecca Innocenti, a police spokeswoman. The news was first reported by Bethesda Now. Police responded shortly before 8 a.m. to the scene, Innocenti said. The driver of the vehicle that struck the woman stayed on the scene. Westport Road is closed at Saratoga Avenue. A man who was struck on Old Georgetown Road Wednesday is being treated at Suburban Hospital.
A 59-year-old man who was struck by car as he attempted to cross Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda Wednesday morning remains in critical condition at Suburban Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Ronna Borenstein-Levy. Police said the man, William George Cole, was struck by a 2006 Honda Civic in the southbound lanes of Old Georgetown Road just north of Alta Vista Road around 9:37 a.m. Cole suffered life-threatening injuries, police said. Meredith Daly, an employee at the nearby Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health, said she drove by and saw a man lying in the street who appeared to be "completely unresponsive." 12 vehicle collisions involving pedestrians or bicyclists have been reported by Patch in the first weeks of 2013, and among those, four pedestrians and one bicyclist were killed as a result. All of the fatalities occurred in the middle and eastern portions of the county. In Bethesda, three collisions have been reported including one incident when apedestrian on Old Georgetown Road was critically injured. Update, 12:52 p.m.: The driver of the Honda in this morning's pedestrian collision has been identified as Remy Jean Paul Bosselut, 52, of the 6000 block of Chatsworth Lane in Bethesda. The man who was struck, William George Cole, 59, remained in critical condition and is undergoing treatment, police said.
