Raising $90,000, the school beat out Pennies for Patients fundraising powerhouse Walter Johnson High School this year.
Walt Whitman High School came out on top of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients High School Challenge this year, raising more than $90,000 and beating reigning fundraising champion, Walter Johnson High School. The competition took place throughout the month of February among 15 local high schools, aimed to to fundraise for cancer research and teach students leadership skills. Before Whitman's win this year, Walter Johnson had won the competition seven years in a row. The 15 schools raised more than $210,000 collectively, with Whitman raising $91,761.76 and runner up Walter Johnson bringing in more than $80,000. Walter Johnson students raised more than $58,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Students from Walter Johnson High School celebrated their successful fundraising campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's National Capital Area Chapter with a pep rally April 13. The school was named the top fundrasier of 14 county schools this year after collecting more than $58,000 to benefit the LLS Pennies for Patients program. WJ students have taken the lead seven years in a row— their total topping $170,000. This year, Walt Whitman High School ranked in second place. Students continued the seven-year reign as the top fundraisers in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's High School Challenge.

Student runners defy wind advisory and race for charity on full stomachs.
For at least a dozen young runners, it was not enough to face wind gusts of nearly 40 miles per hour, stomachs laden with 23-ounce burritos, a competition fee of $15 and four fast laps on a 40-degree Saturday morning. They had to do it shirtless. The sixth annual Burrito Mile fundraiser was organized by students at Walter Johnson High School for Pennies for Patients, a program that benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Bannockburn Elementary School and Bethesda Country Day School join an elite team of Pennies for Patients fundraisers
Two Bethesda schools raising money for Pennies for Patients join the ranks of the Pennies Elite Team, a group of schools that have reached the 10-year mark fundraising for the program that benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Bannockburn Elementary School and Bethesda Country Day School raised $25,080 combined in the past nine years, according to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Soccer players from Walter Johnson High School and Walt Whitman High School got a special visitor at a boys' varsity game last week. D.C. United midfielder Chris Pontius stopped by a Thursday game to visit with players and thank them for their support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients program, which challenges elementary, middle and high schools to raise funds for LLS and local blood cancer patients and their families. Whitman and WJ have been the top fundraisers for the program in the past several years, according to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, with WJ consistently leading the pack in fundraising for the past six years.
