More helpful would be a chart showing causation. Who was at fault? What were the pedestrians wearing. So far, the approach appears to be a scattergun approach of blaming the drivers. Today alone I observed dozens of pedestrians cutting through moving traffic.   more ›

Intensity of Flu-Like Illnesses Still High in Maryland

The brunt of the flu virus may have passed, but other strains of the virus are keeping the number of flu-like illnesses high in Maryland.

The flu strain that has been making many sick in Maryland and around the country may be peaking, but that doesn't mean it's time to cease precautions and skip the flu shot. Other strains could circulate, keeping the flu around for months. Overall, the intensity of flu-like illnesses in Maryland remains high, according to the latest Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene report for the week ending Jan. 19. The influenza virus was geographically widespread according to the last report, meaning there is flu activity throughout different regions, said David Blythe, a medical epidemiologist with the state. While the virus is difficult to predict, he said there is a possibility the flu has peaked and is headed toward a decline. Even …

Report: Flu Numbers Dropping in Maryland

Doctors are still urging residents to get a flu shot.

The number of flu cases in Maryland have dropped over the last week, but health officials are still pushing residents to get the flu vaccine, according to a report in The Gazette. The week ending Dec. 29, 10.1 prcent of people visiting doctors were for the flu and the week ending Jan. 5 only 3.5 percent of people visiting doctors were there for the flu, according to a report from the state. Maryland’s flu season might have peaked, but the number of cases remains widespread statewide and health officials are still urging people to be vaccinated, a state epidemiologist said Monday. The numbers are still higher than the past two flu seasons, according to the Gazette report.

Speak Out: What Would You Do On Your Last Day On Earth?

The world could end Dec. 21 if the Mayan calendar is correct.

If the Mayans are right, the world is supposed to end Dec. 21. Though many scholars have debunked the end of the world myth, across the DMV, people are throwing parties to celebrate. So we want to know, if Friday is your last day on Earth, what would you do to make it special? What's on your doomsday bucket list?

I spent my end of the world day watching the news and getting more and more depressed about the state of this country. Maybe the Mayans were on to something. Only, it won't be Dec. 21... it will be some unknown date when the chinese finally stop buying our bonds. Or take over our industries.   more ›

Maryland Reacts to Sandy Hook School Shooting

Counties across the state took measures to deal with the Newtown, CT school shooting.

Communities across Maryland have been reeling in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Some residents said they feared dropping their children off at school while others demanded action from legislators. Hyattsville Elementary School's new principal, Julia Burton, addressed her students Monday before Prince George's County schools observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, CT. "Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. And take care of the place," she told students. In Wheaton, parents reacted to the tragic news and talked about school safety in Montgomery County. Frances Frost, a contributor to the Local Voices section on Wheaton Patch, wrote in an email: "As a mom of 4…

Locals Honor Those Killed at Sandy Hook

In Montgomery and Prince George's counties, many organizations honored the victims with vigils, flags at half staff and more.

There has been an outpouring of support for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Connecticut. A candlelight vigil will be held Monday at 7 p.m. in Ijamsville, MD, the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce announced in a news release. Noelle Tate, a mother of 5- and 1-year-old girls, organized the memorial to show respect and support for the Newtown, CT, victims and their families. “I’ve been deeply affected by the tragic events that took place on Friday," Tate said in a statement. Westboro Baptist Church Member Says Group Will Picket Sandy Hook Elementary

The group also picketed a Prince George's County High School last year, calling it "pervert-run."

A member of Westboro Baptist Church, the group that picketed Northwestern High School in Prince George's County last year is headed for Sandy Hook Elementary School. Westboro Baptist is known for picketing funerals of soldiers and AIDS victims and now says it plans to picket Sandy Hook Elementary School, according to Examiner.com. A day after Friday's shooting in Newtown, CT, where police said 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother and then 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary, Westboro Baptist member Shirley Phelps-Roper posted a message on Twitter that the group would "sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment." On March 1, 2011, Westboro came to Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, which…

I can just imagine the greeting the Westboro Church people get from the police and other brave first responders in Newtown. Phred Phelps and his clan of fanatics, hate-mongers, and vicious, un-Christian lunatics have a special place in the contempt and disgust of real Christians and other people of faith.   more ›

Veterans Day 2012

A history of Veterans Day and what's open and closed.

This Sunday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day, a time to recognize and honor those who have served in our nation’s military. But why that day? The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed "November 11" as the first remembrance of the end of the Great War: To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations… In 1926, Congress …
